Shots Fall for Men's Basketball as They Get Crucial Road Victory at UMBC, 64-57

BOX SCORE

BALTIMORE -
With nothing but home games in their forseeable future, the Hartford men's basketball team closed their regular season road schedule out right on Saturday night, jumping all over UMBC early and clamping down late for a 64-57 victory. The Hawks hit 11-of-28 three-pointers, including six from senior Joe Zeglinski.

Zeglinski led all scorers with 22 points, and was named the America East Player of the Game. Justin Fry earned the recognition for the Retrievers, scoring 20 points and pulling down a school-record 20 rebounds. It was the second consecutive game that an opponent grabbed a school-record rebound total against the Hawks.

For a while in the first half, it looked like the Hawks might not take, let alone make, anything but three pointers. The Hawks were 6-for-11 from downtown as they built an 18-11 lead, missing their only two-point attempt during that time. Even when they finally scored inside, a strong move by senior Anthony Minor, it was a three-point play as Minor was fouled and hit the free throw to make it 21-11.

Minor finished with 12 points, including a season-high four free throws. He added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Not until 8:27 remained in the first half did the Hawks finally settle for a routine two-point play, as another lay-in from Minor made it 23-11. The Hawks held UMBC scoreless for an 8:12 stretch in the first half, and did not allow a Retriever field goal between the 12:35 mark in the first half and the 19:16 mark in the second.

UMBC stayed within shouting distance despite their shooting woes from the floor thanks to 6-of-8 free throw shooting by Justin Fry. Down 33-17 at the break, the Retrievers stormed back in the second, shooting 51.9 percent from the floor. After missing their first 10 three-pointers, the Retrievers knocked down four in a row to cut a 45-31 deficit with 12:34 remaining down to three, 51-48 with 7:52 to play.

From there, the Hawks clamped back down on defense. Hartford did not allow another trey from UMBC the rest of the way, and began to make things difficult for Fry and the rest of the Retrievers down low. With 2:46 to play, Zeglinski helped the Hawks build the lead back to seven points when he knocked down his sixth three-pointer of the game. UMBC missed six long-range shots to close out the game, as Hartford held on for the 64-57 win.

With his six three-pointers, Zeglinski now has 381 for his career, moving him from 16th on the NCAA all-time list at the beginning of the night into 13th place overall. Next up on the list is A.J. Abrams of Texas, who had 389 treys from 2005-09.

The Hawks now can look forward to a return to Chase Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion, where they will play their final two regular season games. The Hawks' home court also hosts the America East Championships for a second consecutive season, so Hartford would not have to leave West Hartford until a potential America East title game at a higher seed.

Next up for Hartford is a visit from Stony Brook on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 860-768-HAWK, or by visiting the Malcolm and Brenda Berman Athletics Box Office at the Reich Family Pavilion. Fans who can't make it to the game can listen to all the action on the flagship station of the Hawks, WDRC-1360 AM. Jeff Dooley and Randy LaVigne will be at the mics.
