HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.—The University of Hartford women's and men's tennis teams fell on the road at Hofstra Friday. The women dropped a 6-1 decision to the Pride in the Hawks' first action in more than three weeks. Meanwhile, the Hawk men fell, 7-0, in their second match in as many days.
On the women's side, graduate student
Abby Liu extended her winning streak at the No. 1 singles spot to four matches. Liu picked up a straight-set victory, 6-2, 6-2, over Hofstra's top player, Elena Ivanova. Liu is now 4-1 in singles play this Spring. Liu picked up the only win for the Hawk women.
On the men's side, the Hawks picked up a win in the No. 3 doubles match. Junior
Bogdan Nedelcu and sophomore
Alex Holdstein teamed up to earn an 8-4 win over the Pride's Jason Sinkoff and Pedro Gimenez. Hofstra was able to pick up the doubles point with two close victories, 9-7 in the top doubles match and 9-8 (2) in the No. 2 tandem match.
A pair of Hawk men, juniors
Josh Isaacson and
Edgardo Ureta, pushed their singles matches to a tiebreaking third set. Playing from the No. 3 slot, Isaacson won the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (4). However, his opponent, Hofstra's Matt Gemmell, earned a 6-3 decision in the second set before outlasting Isaacson, 12-10, in the superbreak. In the No. 6 singles match, Ureta dropped the first set to Gimenez, but stormed back with a 6-4 win in the second set to tie the match. Gimenez pulled out the match win with a 10-7 decision in the superbreak.
Both Hawk squads are in action again this weekend. The Hawks host NJIT in West Hartford Sunday with matches beginning at 11 a.m. Matches will be played at nearby St. Joseph's College to accommodate both the men's and women's teams.
