Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Morgan Lumb finished with a team-best 11 points in her collegiate debut as the University of Hartford women's basketball team dropped a 79-53 decision to the Providence College Friars on Wednesday night. Hartford falls to 1-2 on the season, while the Friars improve to 4-1 overall.

Hartford finished the game shooting 33.3 percent from field (19-of-57) with freshman Deanna Mayza and junior Cherelle Moore joining Lumb in leading the Hawks with 10 points each. Mayza and Moore's double figure night is the second straight game for with 10 or more points.

The Hawks did win the battle of the boards with a 43-35 advantage, led by Moore who grabbed eight rebounds, one shy of her career high. Amber Bepko finished with five rebounds. The Hawks turned the ball over 25 times, a season high, which Providence turned into 42 points.

In addition to her 11 points, Lumb finished with three rebounds, two assists and two blocks in her first game as a Hawk. The freshman finished the game shooting 4-of-8 from the field with one of those baskets from long range. She also made 2-of-4 from the free throw line.

Hartford put the first points on the board 24 seconds into the contest as Mayza hit the first field goal attempt of the evening. The Friars answered by scoring the next nine points taking a seven point advantage. The Hawks responded to that run by scoring five-straight on a jumper from Mayza and a three pointer from Bepko, who finished with seven points.

Providence went on to score 10 of the next 12 points, extending their lead into double figures for the first time at 26-11 with 9:56 remaining in the opening half. A 15-3 run for the Friars extended their advantage to 43-18, while they took a 49-23 lead into the locker room at the break.

Coming out of the intermission, Hartford looked to cut into the deficit scoring six of the first eight points, pulling the deficit to 51-29 with 17:34 remaining. Moore would open up the second half with a pair of layups, the second one on a put back attempt.

Providence extended its lead to the largest of the game with 10:31 remaining in the game thanks to an 8-0 stretch. Hartford would close out the contest scoring the final eight points including a pair of three pointers from Lumb and Katelyn Skinner.

The Hawks will play their first game in the friendly confines of the Chase Family Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion when they welcome the UMass Minutewomen on Saturday, November 23. Hartford and UMass met last season at the Mullins center with the visitors taking a 71-65 victory back to West Hartford.
