CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Freshman Morgan Lumb scored a career-high 16 points as the University of Hartford women's basketball team dropped its fifth-straight game to the St. Francis (N.Y.) Terriers on Saturday at the Miami Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Hawks (1-6 overall) finished the game shooting 33.9 percent overall on 19-of-56. Lumb was joined in double figures by junior guard Amber Bepko who finished with 12 points on 5-of-10, leading all Hartford shooters. Included in the Hawks 19 baskets were seven three pointers, while they took 26 attempts from beyond the arc for 26.9 percent average.
Hartford also dropped the battle of the boards by a 34-26 margin, led by junior Shanise Bultron who finished with five rebounds. Eleven of the Hawks 26 total rebounds came on the offensive end with Hartford turning those into seven second chance points. The Hawks also capitalized off the 22 turnovers they forced for the Terriers, scoring 24 points off of those miscues. Hartford finished with a season-low 11 turnovers.
Lumb also led the Hawks with four assists and two steals while she grabbed four rebounds. For the game, the sophomore from North Andover, Mass. Finished 6-of-11 from the field, including scoring four of her team's seven total three pointers. St. Francis finished the game shooting 46.9 percent overall, led by Eilidh Simpson who finished with 15 points.
Hartford opened up its second-straight game with a three pointer off the opening tip, this one out of the hands of the freshman guard Lumb. She would score two three pointers in the opening two minutes, providing an early 8-2 lead for the Hawks.
The Terriers responded by scoring eight straight for the first lead change of the afternoon contest, taking a 10-8 advantage with 15:06 remaining before the break. The Hawks would then respond with a 7-0 run that provided another lead change with the Hawks holding that lead for the remainder of the first half.
Another Hartford run, a 9-1 rally, provided the Hawks largest lead of the opening half at nine points with a 24-15 advantage with 7:32 remaining. The final five points in that rally came by way of a three pointer from Bultron and a layup from senior Alyssa Englert.
St. Francis was able to pull within one point of Hartford in the final minutes of the half, using an 8-2 run. The Hawks responded by scoring the final three points before intermission, taking a 33-29 lead into the locker room.
Coming out of the break, the Hawks opened the scoring on a layup from Englert, before taking an eight point advantage with 12:17 remaining on the fourth three pointer from Lumb. That three point basket was the last field goal for a six minute stretch, allowing the Terriers to score 13-straight points to take a 49-44 lead, their largest to that point. The first eight points in that rally came from Connecticut native Sarah Benedetti.
Bepko would break up the Terriers momentum with a three-pointer with 6:14 remaining. Neither team would score over the next three-plus minutes until a put-back basket from Bepko tied the game at 49 with 2:42 remaining. That layup would turn out to be the last for Hartford as the Terriers scored the final seven points, all at the free throw line, Â taking the 59-49 victory.
The Hawks continue a five-game road stretch with a visit to in-state foe Quinnipiac on Wednesday, December 4. The Hawks and Bobcats are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff at the TD Bank Sports Center with the contest scheduled to air live on NESN. Last season, Hartford defeated the Bobcats 67-61 behind a season-high 21 points from Ruthanne Doherty.
