WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford women's basketball team dropped a 65-56 decision to the visiting Vanderbilt (8-2 overall) Commodores on Sunday afternoon at the Reich Family Pavilion. Junior Shanise Bultron finished with a game-best 14 points leading three Hawks (2-9 overall, 1-0 America East) who finished in double figures.
Bultron finished her season-best scoring night shooting 5-of-8 overall including 4-of-7 from beyond the three point arc. Joining her in double figures was classmate Cherelle Moore, who finished with 11, and senior Alyssa Englert who chipped in 10. Overall, Hartford finished the game shooting 41.2 percent on 21-of-51, including making 6-of-17 (35.3 percent) from beyond the three point arc.
Vanderbilt also won the battle of the boards with a 41-22 advantage with Hartford led by four player who all finished with four rebounds. Hartford did force 20 Vanderbilt turnovers, finishing with less mishandles than its opponent for the second straight game, while they turned those turnovers into 15 points. Freshman point guard Deanna Mayza finished her second-straight game leading the team with five assists, giving her a team-best 33 for the season.
Hartford came out of the gates on fire, taking an early 13-4 lead with 14:10 remaining. Three of Hartford first five baskets came from beyond the arc with two of those coming from Englert. Moore, Mayza and Bultron also added buckets in the early run.
Looking at a nine point deficit, Vanderbilt's Marqu'es Webb rattled off three-straight lay-ups to pull the Commodores within three points with just under 11 minutes until the break. Hartford would the-n match their next four points before taking a 19-14 lead on a jump shot from Taylor Clark with 8:43 remaining. That would be the last basket over the next five-plus minutes which allowed Vanderbilt to score 13 unanswered points and take their first lead of the game, as much as 27-19.
A three pointer from Bultron, her second of the game, would end the visitors momentum, however Vanderbilt would take a 32-25 advantage into the locker room as the break. Hartford was led by Moore, Bultron and Englert who all finished the first half with six points.
Coming out of the break, the momentum shifted yet again as Vanderbilt would muster just three baskets in the first eight-plus minutes. Hartford used that same stretch to score 14 points and take a 39-37 lead with 12:28 remaining. The final nine points in that span were all unanswered until a layup from Rayte'a Long ended the rally and tied the score at 39.
Following four additional ties, the last of which at 47 with 6:37 remaining, the Commodores began a stretch where they scored 12-of-14 points to game the first double digit advantage of the game,59-49 with 122 seconds remaining. Hartford answered that deficit by scoring five straight points forcing the Commodores to call a timeout and regroup leading by five with 1:12 on the clock.
Vanderbilt came out of that timeout and scored the next five points to regain a double digit advantage with the only basket Hartford could manage in the final minute coming on a layup from Mayza with 27 seconds remaining.
Following a break for final exams, the Hawks will have a date with the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Saturday, December 21 at 2 p.m. The Hawks and Pioneers will meet for the first time since November 22, 2010 with the Hawks winning that match-up, 62-53. Overall, Hartford has won the last four meetings with Sacred Heart.
