Hawks Fall at In-State Foe Quinnipiac on Wednesday Night

Box Score

HAMDEN, Conn. –  Freshman point guard Deanna Mayza shot 50 percent from the field and led the team with 13 points, but the University of Hartford women's basketball team dropped a 62-49 decision to in-state foe Quinnipiac University on Wednesday night at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. Hartford falls to 1-7 overall while the Bobcats improve to 4-4 in 2013-14.

Mayza's 13 points was her third game of the season in double figures while she led the team for the third time. She was joined in double figures by junior Shanise Bultron who finished with 10 points, her first game of the season in double figures. Seven other players all finished with at least two points, with freshman La'Trice Hall finishing third overall with five.

As a team, Hartford finished the game outshooting the Bobcats, making 37.8 percent of their field goal attempts (17-of-45). The Bobcats finished the contest shooting 26.9 percent, taking 67 total shots, making 18 of them. The Hawks also outshot Quinnipiac from beyond the arc, connecting on 6-of-17 from long range for 35.3 percent. The Bobcats were led by Gillian Abshire who finished with 14 points.

The Hawks also won the battle of the boards with a 44-39 margin, the third game of the year Hartford has outrebounded an opponent. Leading the Hawks rebounding efforts was junior Cherelle Moore who finished with seven boards, all on the defensive end. Freshman Morgan Lumb and Bultron each added six rebounds, while rookie Alyssa Reaves chipped in with five.

After the Hawks took a 4-3 advantage three minutes into the game, the Bobcats rattled off 11-straight points to take their second lead of the game, a 14-4 advantage with 13:48 remaining before the halftime break. A jump shot form senior Taylor Clark broke up that rally eight seconds after Quinnipiac took its 10 point lead.

Hartford would use a three pointer from Mayza to cut the Bobcats lead into single digits at 23-14, but Quinnipiac responded by taking its largest lead of the game with 7:43 remaining. A three pointer from Samantha Guastella and a pair of free throws from Adily Martucci provided the Bobcats a 28-14 cushion.

Trailing 30-16 with four minutes remaining, the Hawks put together their first rally of the game scoring 10-straight to pull within four with 2:00 minutes remaining. A pair of layups from Hall and back-to-back three pointers from Bultron added up to the Hawks largest rally of the game.

A pair of free throws, the first of the game for Hartford, from Mayza with three seconds remaining before the break led Hartford to an eight point deficit at the intermission. Bultron would lead Hartford into the locker room with six points.

Coming out of the break, Hartford cut the lead by two more points on a layup from Reaves before Quinnipiac extended its advantage back into double figures with 16:26 remaining. Mayza fired away from downtown, her second three pointer of the night, pulling the Hawks back into single digits at 35-42.

Back-to-back layups from Maria Napolitano and Camryn Warner allowed the Bobcats to match their largest lead of the game at 14, however those two baskets would be the last for Quinnipiac over the next seven-plus minutes. Hartford used that cold spell to score nine unanswered points and pull within five, 47-52. That rally for the Hawks included an old fashioned three-point play from Mayza and a three pointer, the third of the game, from Bultron.

Bultron's three pointer would prove to be Hartford final basket of the night, coming with eight minutes remaining, as the Hawks would score just five more points in the contest, all at the free throw line. Quinnipiac secured its victory scoring the final seven points of the night including four-straight free throws from Gillian Abshire.

The Hawks continue a five-game road stretch with a Sunday afternoon matinee at Boston College. The meeting against the Eagles is the first since 2011-12 and the third overall under head coach Jennifer Rizzotti. In the previous two meetings under Rizzotti, each team won on its home court.
