Box Score VESTAL, N.Y. – A putback from University of Hartford sophomore
Taylor Dyson in the final seconds of the game pushed the visiting Hawks past Binghamton, 56-54, at the Events Center Thursday night. Extending their win streak to a season-best three games, Hartford improves to 10-11 overall and 4-2 in America East action while the Bearcats drop to 4-15 and 1-5 in the conference.
With the score tied at 54, junior
Wes Cole, who poured in a game-best 24 points, missed an open three-pointer with six seconds to play but Dyson grabbed the rebound, dodged a pair of Bearcat defenders and knocked down the baseline jumper with just 3.9 seconds left. Dyson finished with seven points while junior
Mark Nwakamma rounded out Hartford's top-scorers with seven points, adding seven rebounds.
Trailing by double-digits early in the game and facing a six point disadvantage in the second, the Hawks came back to take a six-point lead at 50-44 with 4:49 left on the clock using a 17-5 run that featured four Cole three-pointers. Binghamton, which was held to just one field goal over the final nine minutes, tied up the game at 54-all at 1:34 with a pair of free throws by Jordan Reed.
With 67 seconds to go, Nwakamma's hook shot in the paint rolled around the rim and the score remained tied. Following two timeouts, Binghamton was forced to settle for a long three by Karon Waller as the shot clock expired. Grabbing the rebound, Hartford called for time twice and with seven seconds left, it went on to win its fifth game in six tries.
Yosef Yacob, a rookie, was the only other player to finish in double figures, scoring 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Despite a hot first half, Binghamton shot just 40.0 percent (18-of-45) overall, going 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from behind the arc.
For the fourth time this season, the Hawks finished in double figures in made threes, converting on 10-of-28 shots. Cole, who is coming off a school record breaking outing featuring 10 treys against UMass Lowell, sank eight to lead his team in scoring for the third time in four contests.
The Bearcats made 8-of-9 to start the game and pulled ahead, 20-11, with 13:23 left in the first. That lead ballooned to 24-14 before Hartford leveled the score at 26-26 using a 12-2 spurt, sparked by an
Oren Faulk three-point play. Cole contributed a three during that run to trim the deficit to four before a Nwakamma jumper and a Dyson layup made it a new ball game with 4:19 left until the break.
The Hawks had 10 first half turnovers, allowing the Bearcats to take a slim 28-27 lead at the half. In the second, Binghamton went 14-of-18 from the charity stripe to stay within striking distance despite a five-minute stretch without a field goal. A 7-0 Hartford run, featuring back-to-back Cole triples, erased a 44-43 deficit and put the Hawks back in front for good with just under five minutes remaining.
Faulk provided the Hawks with 21 solid minutes, scoring five points, grabbing three rebounds and handing out a team-best three assists.
The turnaround will be another quick one for the Hawks as they hit the hardwood at UMBC's RAC Arena on Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. matinee. The game is part of a doubleheader with the Hartford and UMBC women's teams with that contest slated for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
