Alyssa Reaves and
Deanna Mayza paced a balanced attack with 12 points apiece, leading the University of Hartford women's basketball squad to a 66-42 win over Binghamton on Thursday night at Chase Family Arena. The win was the second straight for Hartford which improves to 6-13 on the season and 3-3 in the America East Conference.
Ten players collected points for the Hawks who shot 44.1 percent from the field on 26-of-59, their third-best percentage of the year. Hartford also converted eight three-point field goals in shooting 34.8 percent from beyond the arc. Junior
Amber Bepko contributed nine points, including a pair of three-pointers, to go with four rebounds. Freshman
Morgan Lumb and senior
Alyssa Englert added seven points apiece. Junior
Cherelle Moore posted six points while matching Reaves with a game-high eight boards.
Hartford raced to a 14-0 lead less than six minutes into the game by scoring on six of its first eight possessions. Reaves opened with a pair of baskets for the early lead and a Mayza three-pointer made it 14-0 just 5:40 into the game. Binghamton finally got on the board at the 13:22 mark, but the Hawks responded with six more points to open up a 20-2 advantage after an
Alyssa Englert layup. Hartford extended its lead to 34-7, its largest of the season, on a Bepko trey with 5:44 left in the half.
Binghamton cut the lead to 36-15 by halftime, but the Hawks remained in control. Mayza led all players with nine points in the opening stanza. Bepko contributed seven in eight minutes while Reaves added six markers and seven rebounds.
Binghamton scored the first three points of the second half in trimming its deficit to 18 points at 36-18 but never got closer. The Hawks responded with baskets from Moore, Englert and Reaves to push the lead back to 42-18. Hartford maintained control with Mayza's second three-pointer putting Hartford up, 52-26, at the 10:11 mark.
Moore contributed four points in the middle of a 9-0 spurt later in the half which pushed Hartford's lead to 28 points at 63-35 with 3:47 remaining. Moore led Hartford with six second-half points and five rebounds.
Hartford converted 25 points off 24 Binghamton turnovers. The Hawks committed just 10 turnovers while dishing out 17 assists, their second-highest total of the season. Hartford also collected a season-high 13 steals in the contest while getting 29 points from its bench.
