Men's Hoops' Comeback Bid Falls Short at UMBC

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Hartford battled back from a 17-point deficit at UMBC, but was unable to complete the comeback bid in the final seconds as the Retrievers went on to win, 60-58, Saturday at RAC Arena. Sophomore Taylor Dyson led the Hawks with 15 points and a career-best nine rebounds as the Hawks fall to 10-12 overall and 4-3 in the America East.

Erasing a 13-point halftime disadvantage and trailing by two, the Hawks gained possession of the ball following three-straight UMBC misses with 20 seconds left to play. Hartford had three looks to win or tie – a Cole three and two Yolonzo Moore II jumpers -- but came up empty, ending a season-long win streak of three games.

Moore was the only other Hawk to join Dyson in double figures, finishing with 13 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the field and a 7-of-8 effort from the charity stripe. Junior Corban Wroe also pulled down nine boards as the Hawks outrebounded the Retrievers, 37-29.

Hartford struggled to take care of the ball in the first frame, committing 11 turnovers that translated into 13 UMBC points on the other end. Four early miscues allowed UMBC to jump out to a 9-2 advantage three minutes in to action. The Retrievers continued to build on their lead, stretching a 23-17 margin to 17 (39-22) using a 16-3 run that featured four triples, including back-to-back long balls 21 seconds apart from Rodney Elliiott and Chase Plummer.

Before the end of the half, the Hawks managed to cut the deficit to 13 points thanks to a pair of free throws from both Moore and Jeremiah Aska. The first two points of Aska's career made it a 39-26 contest at the break.

All but two of Dyson's points came in the first half, a stretch where he went a perfect 6-of-6 from the line. At one point in the stanza, he scored nine-straight, helping Hartford claw out of its early deficit and close the gap down to three at 18-15.

After the intermission, the Hawks started to chip away, trimming the gap down to eight with 13:29 to go. Dyson piggy-backed a Moore layup with a pair of free throws to make it a single-point contest for the first time since late in the opening half. Hartford continued to rally, tying up the game at 58-all with 2:28 to go using a 16-3 run.

Highlighting that run was a Wes Cole three-pointer, his first of two on the afternoon, that made it a 55-47 game with 7:01 remaining. During that stretch, which spanned over the next five minutes and included seven-straight Hawk points, Hartford was 6-of-6 from the free throw line where it shot 25-of-32 (78.1 percent) overall.

With 2:28 left to play, junior Jamie Schneck's tied up the game for the first time since opening tip, making it a 58-58 contest on a layup. On the next possession, though, Bryan Harris followed the tying bucket by sinking what proved to be the game-winning free throws to end a three-game skid for the Retrievers.

Harris then went on to secure a pair of offensive boards for the Retrievers as time continued to fall off of the game clock. With 20 seconds left, Schneck grabbed a rebound off a UMBC miss, and after racing down the court, Cole pulled the trigger from the top of the key for a potential game-winning three. Coming off of the rim, Moore grabbed the rebound and had two chances to tie the game again, but he was unable to convert.

Harris finished with 15 points, joining Rodney Elliott in leading the Retrievers in scoring. Both teams shot just over 37-percent on the night from the floor and less than 30-percent from three. Hartford converted on 3-of-12 three-point attempts while UMBC made 6-of-22 from downtown.

Hartford concludes the month of January on Wednesday night when it welcomes the Vermont Catamounts to the Chase Family Arena. The game will be live on ESPN3 and set for a 7 p.m. tip.
