WEST HARTFORD, Conn. –
The University of Hartford women's basketball team opened up 2014 with a 56-43 victory over the Dartmouth Big Green, closing out the non-conference schedule with a 3-10 record. Leading the way for Hartford was junior Amber Bepko who finished with 11 points, all coming in the first half.

Bepko's 11 points led all players in the game and represented the only Hawk to finish in double figures, her sixth game of the season with 10 or more. She would finish the opening half perfect from the field at 3-of-3, all coming from beyond the arc. For the game, Bepko finished 3-of-5 shooting, with three rebounds a pair of steals and an assist.

Joining Bepko in leading Hartford was senior Alyssa Englert (9 points) and rookie's Deanna Mayza and Morgan Lumb who each added eight points. Englert and Lumb also led the Hawks with four assists each, while freshman La'Trice Hall led Hartford with six rebounds, tying her career high originally set against Loyola on November 14.

As a team, Hartford finished the game shooting 40.7 percent from the field on 22-of-54, while making 3-of-9 from beyond the arc. Defensively, Hartford held the Big Green without a three point basket 31-plus minutes, after holding its last opponent, Penn State, without a three pointer for the full 40 minutes. The Big Green did finish with a 49-34 advantage on the boards with Lakin Roland leading all players with 14 boards to go along with a team-high 10 points.

Hartford came out of the gate to score the first two baskets of the game on layups from Cherelle Moore and Taylor Clark, taking an early 4-0 lead. The Hawks would never relinquish that lead despite the Big Green tying the game at four and six before Hartford used a 15-2 run to pull ahead 21-8 with 11:29 remaining in the opening half.

That run included baskets from five different players, with Alyssa Reaves and Bepko leading the way with four points each. Hartford would again extend that run, to as much as 20-3, taking a 26-10 lead thanks to a three pointer from Bepko on a second chance opportunity and a layup from Mayza with 9:11 remaining in the first.

Hartford would take its largest lead of the game with under a minute to play before the break thanks to five-straight points, the last four from Bepko, which provided a 40-20 cushion with 36 seconds remaining. Kaitana Martinez would shift the momentum to the Big Green scoring the final basket of the half on a layup with 15 seconds remaining. The 18-point halftime lead for Hartford is its largest of the season, while the 47.1 percent (16-of-28) first half shooting effort was the Hawks best through the first 14 games.

Coming out of the intermission, the Big Green weren't going to put away easily as they used a 15-6 rally over the first 12-plus minutes to pull the game into single digits. That deficit, 47-36, came courtesy of a layup from the Big Green's Kamala Thompson. Included in the 15 points for Dartmouth was seven from Fanni Szabo, which also contained the first three pointer for Dartmouth.

Hartford would answer the Big Green's run by scoring six unanswered to regain a 52-37 advantage with 2:51 remaining. All three of those baskets came from different players with Englert, Moore and Reaves providing the offense.

Down the stretch, Dartmouth would only get as close as 11 thanks to a three pointer from Milica Toskovic, but it would come with just 33 seconds remaining in the contest. Hartford would secure the victory with a pair of free throws each from Englert and Lumb in the final 64 seconds.

The Hawks return to America East action with their next game, traveling to Pritchard Gymnasium at Stony Brook University for the Seawolves' conference opener. Hartford and Stony Brook are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip on Wednesday, January 8. Hartford opened America East play with a 66-56 overtime victory over the Maine Black Bears back on December 11. The match-up against Stony Brook will be broadcast live on the America East Digital Network (AmericaEast.tv).
