Box Score HANOVER, N.H. – Junior
Mark Nwakamma compiled his fourth double-double of the year and sophomore
Taylor Dyson netted a career-high 20 points as the University of Hartford men's basketball team upended Dartmouth, 68-56, at Leede Arena on Tuesday night. The Hawks finish the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 6-9 record while the Big Green, who entered the game with a 5-2 mark at home, falls to 7-6 on the season.
Dyson was on fire all night, making 6-of-7 off the bench while knocking down all five of his three-point attempts to lead all scorers. Nwakamma saw just five shot attempts, but went 6-for-8 from the charity stripe to finish 10 points, leaving him just one-point shy of 1,000 for his career. In addition to 11 rebounds, he handed out a team-high three assists. Rounding out the top-scorers with 14 points was junior
Yolonzo Moore II.
Thanks to Dyson's hot hands, the Hawks finished 50.0 percent from long range (6-for-12) and shot 52.6 percent (20-for-38) on the night. The Big Green, who shot 39.1 percent from the floor, had three players finish in double figures, paced by 13 points from Alex Mitola and 12 from Gabas Maldunas. Mitola drilled all three of Dartmouth's makes from long range.
Hartford took a lead it would maintain for the remainder of the half as an
Evan Cooper layup made it an 11-8 game with 12:35 remaining. After a pair of Dyson triples put the Hawks ahead by six (17-11) with 6:49 remaining, Hartford scored 11 of the next 15 points to open up a double-digit lead at 28-18 with just 40 seconds before halftime. Highlighting that spurt was a 7-0 run, fueled by two Moore jumpers in the paint and Dyson's third trey.
That 10-point advantage would quickly be brought down to six before the halftime buzzer sounded, though, as a Hartford foul and turnover resulted in a half-ending, four-point rally for the Big Green. A layup at the buzzer by Kevin Crescenzi closed the gap to 28-22 at the intermission.
Dyson led all scorers at the break with nine points while junior
Jamie Schneck, also a reserve, had an impressive stat line of four points, two assists and a steal in nine first-half minutes. Hartford's bench went on to outscore that of Dartmouth by 16 points (31-15).
Despite Hartford regaining a double digit lead three more times in the second, Dartmouth kept things interesting in the final half. The Hawks saw a 34-27 advantage quickly disappear early on thanks to a Big Green 9-0 run, a two minute spurt that featured buckets from four different players, including a Mitola triple, to put the home team in front for the first time since the opening minutes.
Dartmouth's edge was short-lived, however, as Hartford answered back by rattling-off a 10-0 run. Schneck, who finished with a season-best eight points, knotted the score up at 36-all with a put back before Moore put the Hawks back in front for good after converting on an old-fashioned three-point play. Dyson capped the spurt with five-straight points, following another three-pointer with a layup to make it a 44-36 game with 12:06 left to play.
With 5:38 to go, the Hawks rebuilt a 10-point cushion on a pair of Schneck free throws. The Big Green came within six points in the closing minutes, but Hartford closed out the game by making 10-of-11 from the charity stripe to maintain its lead.
Outrebounding the Big Green, 29-26, the Hawks also held an edge from the line, connecting on 78.6 percent (22-for-28) of their shots compared to Dartmouth's 68.0 percent effort (17-for-25). As of late, Hartford has been efficient from the charity stripe where it has shot better than 75 percent in the last six games.
Hartford returns home for the first time since Dec. 22 when it hosts the Maine Black Bears on Thursday evening. Tip-off from Chase Family Arena is set for 7 p.m. Those who can't make the game can tune in to WCCC 1290AM (
