Nethersole Ties Career High with 24 Kills to Lead Hawks in Five Set Win Over Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. – The University of Hartford volleyball team defeated Binghamton University in a close five sets (28-26, 22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-11) to record their first conference win of the season.  The Hawks were led by senior outside hitter Sareeta Nethersole who finished with a career high 24 kills for her fourth 20-plus kill match of the season and her first back-to-back 20-plus kill match of the year. Hartford improves to 11-8 overall and 1-2 in the America East.

The Hawks and Bearcats battled through five tough sets seeing 30 tie scores and 16 lead changes throughout the match.  As a team, the Hawks finished with 66 kills for a new five set season high. Nethersole finished as one of three players in double figures, joined by senior middle blocker Kathryn Gawrych and sophomore outside hitter Corinne Horanzy.  Gawrych finished with a match high .500 hitting percentage with 10 kills on 18 attempts with only one error.  Horanzy added 11 kills, while senior setter Jackie Tamburri added 53 assists to the Hawks attack.

Defensively, the Hawks finished with four different players with double digit digs, led by sophomore libero Paola Llerandi's 15.  Nethersole and Horanzy added 14 digs apiece, while Tamburri finished with 11. Henchy finished with five block assists on the night to add to the Hawks 10 overall blocks.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

·          Senior outside hitter Sareeta Nethersole recorded her fourth 20 plus kill match of the season finishing with 24 kills tying her career-high.

·          The Hawks and Bearcats finished the five sets with 30 tie scores and 16 lead changes.

·          Senior middle blocker Kathryn Gawrych finished with a five-set team best .500 hitting percentage with 10 kills on 18 attempts and one error.

·          Playing in the last two sets, senior outside hitter Maya Louis added seven kills on 11 attempts with two errors for a .455 hitting percentage.

·          Three Hawks finished with double digit kills including Nethersole (24), Corinne Horanzy (11), and Gawrych (10).

·          As a team, the Hawks recorded a season high 66 kills.

·          The Hawks saw their best offensive performance with a match best .294 hitting percentage with 13 kills on 34 attempts and three errors.

·          Nethersole led the Hawks offensively with five kills on 10 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage.

·          Horanzy added a .666 hitting percentage with 3 kills.

·          Defensively, Nethersole recorded four digs followed by Tamburri, Henchy, and Gawrych with two apiece.

·          Nethersole recorded a match high six kills on 10 attempts with one error for a .500 hitting percentage.

·          The Hawks and Bearcats saw seven tie scores and six lead changes throughout the set.

·          Horanzy added five kills to the Hawks offense.

·          Nethersole and Llerandi contributed three digs apiece. 

SET THREE

·          Henchy finished with a .428 hitting percentage with four kills on seven attempts with one error.

·          Nethersole added five kills at the net.

·          As a team, the Hawks posted a match high 23 digs led by Horanzy's eight. 

SET FOUR

·          The Hawks and Bearcats saw a match high 11 tie scores throughout the set.

·          Nethersole and Louis recorded five kills apiece.

·          Llerandi led the Hawks defensively with four digs while Erinn Lavelle, Tamburri, and Nethersole added two apiece. 

SET FIVE

·          Gawrych finished with a perfect hitting percentage on three kills.

·          Horanzy had four digs followed by Nethersole, Llerandi, and Lavelle with two apiece.
