Hawks Fall to UNH, 3-1, Nethersole Completes Double Double with 15 kills, 17 digs

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford volleyball team fell to the University of New Hampshire Wildcats (25-11, 25-18, 21-25, 25-12) in an America East matchup on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks (13-10, 2-4 AE) were led by senior outside hitter Sareeta Nethersole who recorded team highs in in kills (15) and digs (17) for her seventh straight double-double of the season.

After dropping the first two sets to the Wildcats, the Hawks recorded their best play in the third set with a .250 hitting percentage and 26 defensive digs while seeing six lead changes and three tie scores but came up short in the fourth set falling 25-12.

The Hawks offense finished with a combined 41 kills led by Nethersole's 15.  Sophomore outside hitter Corinne Horanzy added 11 kills on 32 attempts with six errors for a Hawk best .156 hitting percentage while recording the team's lone service ace. Senior setter Jackie Tamburri contributed 35 assists to the Hawks offense.

As a team, the Hawks combined for 56 digs led by Nethersole, who finished with 17 for her 15th double-double of the season. Sophomore libero Paola Llerandi followed Nethersole defensively with 11 digs while Tamburri and Horanzy added nine apiece.  The Hawks tallied five total blocks on 10 block assists led by Kathryn Gawrych with three followed by freshman Katy Henchy's two block assists to tie her for third overall in a single season.

 

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

·         Senior outside hitter Sareeta Nethersole extended her double-double streak to seven with 15 kills and 17 digs.

·         The Hawks saw their best play in the third set posting a .250 hitting percentage while recording 26 digs defensively.

·         Senior middle blocker Kathryn Gawrych finished with a .136 hitting percentage with eight kills on 22 attempts with five errors to continue to hold the single season best hitting percentage with .309.

·         The Hawks led the Wildcats in hitting percentage (.250), kills (16), assists (15), and digs (26) in the third set.

·         One point shy of a double-double, sophomore Corinne Horanzy records her eighth double digit kill game of the season with 11.

·         Freshman outside hitter Katy Henchy's two block assists ties her for third overall in single season block assists needing five more to take over second all time spot.

SET ONE

·         Four Hawks finished with two kills apiece including Nethersole, Horanzy, Henchy, and Gawrych.

·         Tamburri added seven assists to the Hawks attack.

·         Llerandi and Nethersole led the defense with a combined six digs on the Hawks 11. 

SET TWO

·         Henchy's block assist ties her for third all time for block assists in a single season.

·         Nethersole led the offense with four kills.

·         Horanzy finished with a .500 hitting percentage with three kills on six attempts.

·         Gawrych posted a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage on two kills.

·         Tamburri added 10 assists offensively while leading the Hawks in digs with three. 

SET THREE

·         As a team, the Hawks saw their best play with a .250 hitting percentage and 26 digs.

·         The Hawks and Wildcats saw six tie scores and three lead changes throughout the set.

·         Nethersole led the Hawks with six kills followed by Horanzy with four.

·         Tamburri, Horanzy, and Gawrych all finished with a .500 hitting percentage.

·         Tamburri added 12 assists to the Hawks attack.

·         Nethersole recorded nine digs in the set while Llerandi added eight. 

SET FOUR

·         Nethersole recorded a .400 hitting percentage with three kills.

·         Tamburri finished with all six of the Hawks assists in the set.

Hartford will travel for a pair of conference matches next weekend, opening up at Stony Brook on Friday evening (6 p.m.) before taking on the UMBC Retrievers on Sunday afternoon (2 p.m.). In both matches, the Hawks are looking to revenge earlier season losses as they fell to the Seawolves in four sets and UMBC in five sets.
