Hawks End in Scoreless Draw at Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Hartford women's soccer team outshot Stony Brook 26-11 en route to a 0-0 draw against the Seawolves on Thursday night at Kenneth P. Lavelle Stadium. With the result, coupled with a UMBC victory at Albany, the Hawks are now tied with UMBC on top of the America East standings heading into the regular season finale.

Sophomore keeper Jessica Jurg was tested just once over the 110 minutes and 11 Seawolves shots, with that lone save coming in the 68th minute. Hartford placed nine of their 26 shots on goal, including an attempt from Aaliyah Ingram midway through the first overtime period that Seawolves keeper Ashley Castanio barely got her finger tips on enough to redirect the shot just wide of the goal.

Junior midfielder Sidney Spremullo led Hartford placing three shots on goal while senior Chanel Johnson and junior Kristen McAdams each added a pair. Included in the Hawks 26 total shots were seven in the two overtime periods while managed just two in the extra 20 minutes.

The Hawks finished the match with a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks, three of which came in the second overtime period with the latter of those resulting in the final shot of the game. That attempt came from Johnson as she pushed the attempt wide of the goal with just over two minutes remaining.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

·        Hartford put the pressure on the Seawolves right out of the gate, forcing a corner kick less than one minute into the game and providing the first scoring opportunity in the fourth minute, a shot from Caitlin Smallfield that deflected off the crossbar.

·        The Hawks challenged Stony Brook's keeper twice more before the Seawolves would get their first shot off. The first of those attempts was a rebound attempt after a blocked shot with Kristen McAdams firing a shot that Ashley Castanio registered her first of nine saves on. Less than four minutes later Sidney Spremullo placed her first shot of the game on net, forcing Castanio into action.

·        With 10 minutes remaining in the opening half, McAdams and Spremullo again paired up for back-to-back shots on goal. McAdams provided the first attempt with Spremullo following up 55 seconds later as Castanio finished the first 45 minutes with five saves while Jurg was not pressed into action.

·        Coming out of the break, the Hawks again put the first pressure on when Spremullo placed a pair of shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. Hartford's defense then stepped up when they faced a trio of shots within a 20 second span. All three were blocked by a Hawks defender, never allowing for an attempt on goal.

·        Late in the second half, Chanel Johnson provided a scoring opportunity working with Spremullo who served a corner kick restart to the opposite side of the six-yard box. Johnson was able to redirect Spremullo's restart which Castanio tracked down before it could cross the line.

·        In the first extra frame, the Hawks peppered Stony Brook with six shots, while Stony Brook managed just two attempts, both of which were well off the mark and wide of the net. Over the two extra periods, Hartford out shot Stony Brook 7-2.

·        Sophomore keeper Jessica Jurg made just one save in the game as she earned her fifth shutout of the season, all of which have come in conference play.
