WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford volleyball team dropped a five-set match to the UMBC Retrievers in an America East conference match-up on Sunday afternoon (25-13, 18-25, 25-18, 24-26, 13-15). The Hawks (10-8, 0-2 America East) were led by senior Sareeta Nethersole who recorded 20 kills, passing Erin Macro for fourth all-time.
The Hawks saw their best hitting in the first set when they posted a .500 hitting percentage with 16 kills on 30 attempts and only one error for a new single-set best since their final match in 2012 versus Providence on Nov. 11, 2012 (.426). The Hawks finished the match to with a five-set season best .239 hitting percentage on 61 kills and 22 errors in 163 attempts.
Junior outside hitter Chandler Goodwin recorded a .333 hitting percentage with nine kills and two errors on 21 attempts for a team match-high. Freshman Katy Henchy added to the offense with 12 kills while sophomore Corinne Horanzy finished with 11. Senior Jackie Tamburri added 52 assists on the Hawks attack.
Defensively, four Hawks finished with double digit digs led by Horanzy with 17, recording her fifth double double of the season. Nethersole added to her offensive performance with 12 digs for her 10th double double, while sophomore's libero Paola Llerandi finished with 15 and Erinn Lavelle added 13. Goodwin led the Hawks at the net with two blocks on the afternoon, both solo blocks.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS
· Senior outside hitter Sareeta Nethersole's 11th kill in the third set allowed her to pass Erin Macro for fourth all-time. Her 20 total against UMBC give her 1,118 career kills.
· As a team, The Hawks recorded a .500 hitting percentage in the first set, the best single-set hitting percentage since the final match in 2012 versus Providence on Nov. 11, 2012 (.526).
· Nethersole finished with 20 kills and 12 digs to record her 10th double double of the season.
· Sophomore outside hitter Corinne Horanzy recorded her fifth double double of the year with 11 kills and 17 digs.
· As a team, the Hawks recorded a new five-set season high with a .239 hitting percentage.
SET BREAKDOWN
SET ONE
· The Hawks scored 19 of the last 26 points of the match to earn the first set victory.
· As a team, the Hawks had 16 kills with one error on 30 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage.
· Henchy led the offense with a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage on four attempts.
· Horanzy tallied three kills on five attempts for a .600 hitting percentage while leading the Hawks defense with five digs.
SET TWO
· Nethersole led the Hawks offense with four kills.
· Horanzy and Goodwin added three kills apiece.
· Horanzy led the defense with six digs and Chandler Goodwin gave the Hawks their only block of the set.
SET THREE
· Nethersole had four kills on the set passing Erin Macro for fourth all time.
· Henchy tied Nethersole to lead the Hawks with four kills. Henchy finished with a .375 hitting percentage wit one error in eight attempts.
· Tamburri, Horanzy, and Lavelle each finished with three digs apiece to lead the team.
SET FOUR
· The Hawks and Retrievers saw four lead changes with 11 tie scores.
· Nethersole recorded six kills on 10 attempts for a .600 hitting percentage.
· Henchy added four kills to the Hawks offense.
· Nethersole recorded six digs on the set for her 10th double double of the season.
SET FIVE
· Horanzy recorded her 10th kill for her fifth double double of the season, while leading the offense with three kills on five attempts for a .600 hitting percentage.
· Defensively, Llerandi and Lavelle added three digs a piece.
