Hawks Top Binghamton in Five Set Thriller on Senior Day

WEST HARTFORD, Conn –
The University of Hartford volleyball team defeated the Binghamton Bearcats in a close five set match on Sunday afternoon (18-25, 25-22, 18-25, 29-27, 15-13). Senior Sareeta Nethersole led the Hawks (16-12, 4-6 AE) with her 19th double-double of the season recording 25 kills and 27 digs while passing her sister, Kami Nethersole, for third all-time in career kills (1,280).

Junior Chandler Goodwin combined with Nethersole to record 42 of the 70 Hawk kills.  Goodwin finished with a new career high 17 kills while also posting a .300 hitting percentage on 40 attempts with five errors.  Senior Jackie Tamburri finished with a .600 hitting percentage on seven kills in 10 attempts with one error while also recording a new season high in assists with 58.

The Hawks tied a season high in digs with 91, including five players in double figures.  Nethersole led the defense with a new season high 27 digs followed by sophomore libero Corinne Horanzy with 17.  Tamburri finished with 14 digs while sophomore Erin Lavelle and senior Kathryn Gawrych added 11 apiece.   The Hawks combined for 5 total blocks including two block assists apiece by Gawrych, sophomore Rachel Moll, and freshman Katy Henchy while Tamburri recorded her first career solo block.

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

·         Senior outside hitter Sareeta Nethersole finished with 25 kills to pass her sister, Kami, for third all-time. Nethersole now has 1,280 kills in her career.

·         Junior outside hitter Chandler Goodwin set a new career high with 17 kills

·         After dropping the first set, the Hawks went on to take three out of the last four sets from the Bearcats.

·         The Hawks saw their best offense in the fifth set with a .286 hitting percentage.

·         Senior setter Jackie Tamburri recorded a new team high with 58 assists.

 

SET BREAKDOWN

SET ONE

·         Nethersole led the Hawks with four kills and two digs.

·         Goodwin had two kills on four attempts for a .500 hitting percentage.

·         Tamburri had 11 of the 12 Hawk assists.

·         Horanzy finished with four digs to lead all Hawks.

·         Nethersole and Goodwin each recorded a service ace.

 

SET TWO

·         Goodwin and Nethersole led the Hawks attack with five kills apiece.

·         The Hawks defense combined for 18 digs led by Nethersole's seven.

·         As a team, the Hawks recorded a .244 hitting percentage with 13 kills on 45 attempts and two errors. 

 

SET THREE

·         Nethersole recorded four kills to pass her sister Kami for third all time in kills.

·         Goodwin added four kills

·         The Hawks tallied 23 digs led by Nethersole with eight followed by Tamburri and Gawrych with five apiece.

 

SET FOUR

·         Goodwin and Nethersole had six kills apiece.

·         Louis added four kills.

·         Tamburri had three kills on four attempts for a .750 hitting percentage.

·         The Hawks defense combined for 29 digs in the set led by Horanzy with 9.

 

SET FIVE

·         As a team, the Hawks saw their best offense recording a .286 hitting percentage.

·         Nethersole finished with six kills in the set while Henchy and Tamburri added two each.

·         Lavelle led the Hawks defensively with four digs followed by Nethersole with three.

The University of Hartford volleyball team will finish regular season play with two conference road matches.  The Hawks will face New Hampshire on Friday with a 7 p.m. start followed by a trip to UMass Lowell on Saturday to play the River Hawks at 4 p.m.
