Bepko and Lumb each Finish with 16 as Hawks Fall in OT 76-71 at UNH

Box Score DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Amber Bepko and freshman Morgan Lumb each finished with 16 points to lead the University of Hartford women's basketball team in a 76-71 overtime loss against the New Hampshire Wildcats on Sunday afternoon. With the loss Hartford falls to 9-16 overall and 6-6 in the America East.

Bepko and Lumb led four total players in double figures with Milana Gilbert and Cherelle Moore adding 11 and 10 points, respectively. Overall, Hartford finished the game shooting 36.2 percent from the field (25-of-69), including making a season-high 11 three pointers in 36 attempts for 30.6 percent from beyond the arc. Of the leading scorers, Bepko led the way shooting 6-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-9 from long range. Lumb matched her total three pointers, taking 12 attempts from deep.

Moore led Hartford with her third game grabbing double digit rebounds, completing her third double double of her career with 10 boards. The Hawks trailed in the battle of the boards by a 41-33 margin, but did outrebound the Wildcats offensively with 15 rebounds, turning that into seven second chance points. Hartford also took advantage of 18 Wildcat turnovers, scoring 25 points off of those miscues, while Hartford committed just eight turnovers.

A close battle throughout the 45 minutes with 10 ties and 15 lead changes. The largest margin of the game came in favor of the Hawks who took an eight point advantage with 12:06 remaining thanks to a 9-0 run that included six points from Moore and a three pointer from Lumb.

The beginning of the game would seesaw back and forth with neither team holding more than a two point advantage until a three pointer from Lumb broke a 19-19 tie with 5:18 remaining in the half. That basket came thanks to an assist from Deanna Mayza who finished the game with five helpers.

Hartford would hold that lead until an 8-0 run for the Wildcats resulted in a 29-25 lead with 1:28 left in the half. The final six points in that run came thanks to back-to-back three pointers from Kelsey Hogan and Sarah-Marie Frankenberger. The Hawks would then score five of the final seven points to trail by one at the intermission 31-30, led by Bepko with nine points, all on three pointers (3-of-4).

After the break the lead would seesaw four more times before the Hawks extended a two-point lead to the largest of the game at 47-39 thanks to the 9-0 rally. Hartford would hang out to that lead through the final basket in regulation, a layup with 6.8 seconds remaining that tied the score at 62. A three point attempt at the buzzer bounced off the front of the rim, forcing the Hawks second overtime contest of the season.

Hartford would score the first two baskets in the extra frame with a backdoor layup from Bepko and a jump shot from Alyssa Englert that sandwiched a pair of New Hampshire free throws and resulted in a 66-64 lead with 3:49 left in the OT. New Hampshire would then score eight straight, taking a six point advantage with 38 seconds remaining thanks to a jump shot from Ariel Gaston.

Hartford would get a put-back layup from Moore with 23 seconds remaining to cut the lead to four, but the Wildcats defense didn't allow another basket until a three pointer at the buzzer provided the final tally of 76-71.

The Hawks return to West Hartford for the first of two-straight home games. The first on the list will be the newest member of the America East, UMass Lowell. The Hawks and River Hawks are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Wednesday night, a rematch of an 80-76 victory in the first ever meeting of the programs back in January. The second game in the mini home stand will come against UMBC on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m.
