WEST HARTFORD, Conn. –
Behind a school record 16 three pointers, seven of which came from junior Amber Bepko, the University of Hartford women's basketball led wire-to-wire in an 80-64 victory over the UMBC Retrievers on Saturday afternoon. Hartford improves to 11-16 overall and 8-6 in the America East with two games remaining in the regular season.

Bepko's seven three pointers also set an individual game school record, while her 25 points sets a new career-high as she finished the game shooting 9-of-14 from the field with her seven three pointers coming in 11 attempts from beyond the arc. She also pulled down six rebounds, dished out four assists and picked off two steals to lead the Hawks.

She was joined by three teammates in double figures including classmate Shanise Bultron who tied her career high with 18 points, all of which came from beyond the three point arc. Morgan Lumb (12) and Cherelle Moore (10) round out the leading scorers. As a team, Hartford finished the game shooting 46.2 percent overall while their school record 16 three pointers came in 34 attempts for a 47.1 percent effort.

Hartford also finished the game with a 40-30 advantage in the battle of the boards, led by freshman Alyssa Reaves who pulled down 11 rebounds, two shy of her career high and the fourth time this season she has grabbed double digit boards. In addition to that, the Hawks finished the 40 minute contest with 24 assists among their 30 total baskets. Leading the way was senior Alyssa Englert who finished with six while Deanna Mayza added five and Bepko finished with four.

Bepko scored Hartford's first 13 points, building a 13-2 lead of her own one three baskets from beyond the arc and a pair of jump shots. The Hawks would match that early 11 point lead with the team's fourth three pointer of the afternoon and the first points from a different play with Lumb working off an assist from Bultron.

The double digit advantage would last for nearly six minutes until the Retrievers scored five straight, cutting Hartford's lead to five with 6:50 remaining before the intermission. UMBC would get no closer than five points the remainder of the opening 20 minutes. Hartford took a 38-33 lead into the locker room with Bepko leading all players with 19 points while Lumb added 10.

Coming out of the break, the Retrievers cut the lead to a single buckets but the Hawks answered with a three pointer form Bepko, which at the time tied the previous school record of six with five different players hitting that plateau. Just under three minutes later the record breaking bucket came off an assist from Mayza with 14:18 remaining in the game. That basket provided an eight point lead, 48-40.

The Retrievers cut Hartford's lead to as little as two with 7:35 remaining in the game, using a 7-0 run. The Hawks answered that run with one of their own, scoring six unanswered to regain an eight point lead thanks to back-to-back three pointers from Bultron, the second with 6:48 remaining.

In the final five minutes, UMBC cut Hartford's lead back to one possession with 4:03 remaining, but the Hawks offense answered back by regaining a double digit lead, the first of the second half with just over two minutes remaining. The Retrievers would only muster one more basket in the final two minutes as the Hawks scored the final seven points, closing out the contest with a layup with two ticks remaining from Moore.

The Hawks will travel to Binghamton for their final regular season road contest on Wednesday, February 26. Hartford and the Bearcats are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip off at the Events Center with all the action live on AmericaEast.TV
