Lumb Scores 16 to Lead Hawks in Loss at Albany

Box Score WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman Morgan Lumb  scored a team-high 16 points as the University of Hartford women's basketball team dropped a 90-68 decision to Albany Great Danes on Friday night at SEFCU Arena. The loss, which snapped a five-game win streak, dropped the Hawks to 9-14 overall and 6-4 in America East play.

Lumb was one of three players to finish in double figures, joined by junior Amber Bepko and freshman Alyssa Reaves who finished with 11 and 10, respectively. All 11 of Bepko's points came in the opening 20 minutes. As a team, Hartford finished the game shooting 47 percent from the field (22-of-47), including a 54 percent effort in the second half (13-of-24). Also among the leading scorers was senior's Alyssa Englert and Milana Gilbert who each finished with seven.

The Hawks finished the game matching their season-high of nine three pointers, in 22 attempts, led by Lumb who matched her career-best with four (4-of-6). Overall, Lump missed just three of her nine field goal attempts, while also leading the team with five rebounds. Hartford trailed in the rebounding battle 38-23.

Hartford would never lead in the game with the only tie coming in the opening minutes when Reaves matched the opening basket from Albany with a layup 44 seconds into the game. Albany would then score the next two baskets with the closes the Hawks would come at 6-5 thanks to a three pointer from the corner for Bepko.

After the Hawks pulled within a basket, 9-7, with 16:08 to play in the opening half, the Great Danes used a 9-0 run to extend their lead into double digits for the first time at 18-7. The first seven points in that run came from Tammy Phillip, who closed out the game leading Albany with 19 points.

Trailing by 21 with under six minutes remaining, the Hawks would put together their first back-to-back buckets of the game thanks to jumper from Gilbert and Bepko. The Great Danes would end the half with Imani Tate scoring the two baskets in the final 29 seconds to take a 47-25 lead into the locker room.

Coming out of the intermission, the Hawks look to start a rally with a deep three pointer from Englert as the shot clock expired, but Albany's defense held Hartford without another hoop for nearly four minutes. That drought allowed the Great Danes to take a 59-28 lead, thanks to a 10-0 run capped off by an Erin Coughlin three pointer.

Looking at a 32 point deficit, the Hawks again looked to rally with back-to-back three pointers from Lumb and Shanise Bultron with Megan Craig breaking up the consecutive baskets with a layup with 12:11 remaining in the game.

The Hawks would then use stretch where they scored nine of 11 points to pull within 21 points with 9:14 remaining. The final six points in that stretch came unanswered with a pair of jump shots from Reaves sandwiching two free throws from Gilbert.

Albany answered that rally by scoring the next eight points, regaining a 29 points lead. Lumb would then single handedly cut the lead to 24 thanks to back-to-back baskets, a three pointer and then a steal and fast break layup eight seconds apart. Those two baskets put the differential at 82-58 with 4:34 remaining.

Hartford would end the contest scoring seven of the final eight points, four from Reaves and a three pointer from Katelyn Skinner. The long range basket from Skinner provided the final margin as she connected with 11 seconds remaining.

The Hawks return to the Chase Family Arena at the Reich Family Pavilion for a mid-day battle against the Maine Black Bears on Wednesday, February 12. Hartford will welcome local youth from throughout the region for an ECHO educational day with tours of campus and a pre-game symposium on careers in athletics. Earlier this season, the Hawks posted a 10 point overtime victory against Maine, led by freshman Deanna Mayza who finished with 18 points.
