WEST HARTFORD, Conn. –
Freshman Deanna Mayza closed out the regular season with a career-high 22 points to lead the University of Hartford women's basketball to a 57-49 Senior Day victory over the Vermont Catamounts. The Hawks (12-17, 9-7 AE) will open up America East Championship action against Maine on Friday at 8:30 p.m.

Mayza's 22 points led all players in the game as she led one other Hartford player in double figures, junior Shanise Bultron who finished with 10 points. Cherelle Moore chipped in eight points and Morgan Lumb added seven to round of the Hawks leading scorers.

The rookie point guard finished her career night shooting 6-of-12 from the field, including making all but one of her four three point attempts. She also finished 7-of-8 at the free throw line while grabbing a trio of rebounds. Bultron finished the game making half of her six field goal attempts with a pair of three pointers and making 2-of-4 at the free throw line.

As a team, Hartford finished the game shooting 34.7 percent overall making 17-of-49 field goals. From behind the three point arc, the Hawks finished 6-of-18 (33.3 percent), while finished with 17 free throws in 28 attempts for a 60.7 percent effort at the line. The Hawks also trailed in the battle of the boards with a 44-40 margin, led by Moore who grabbed eight boards. Alyssa Reaves and Bultron each pulled down six rebounds, with Lumb and La'Trice Hall each added five rebounds.

Both teams opened up their offensive efforts with three point baskets with Mayza providing the Hawks first points of the night off a feed from Taylor Clark. The Catamounts would then take an 11-5 lead with 12:31 remaining before the intermission.

The Hawks answered that deficit by cutting the lead to three with Mayza's second three pointer of the afternoon, this one coming thanks to a pass from Amber Bepko. Vermont would extend their lead to as much as seven points, 19-12 thanks to a three pointer from Kylie Atwood, but Hartford closed out the half scoring 11 of the final 14 points to take a 23-22 lead into the break.

Included in that run was seven unanswered points in the final four minutes that included a pair of baskets from Alyssa Englert while Reaves provided the go ahead basket on a jumper off a feed from Englert with 1:46 remaining.

Coming out of the intermission, the Catamounts would take another lead, this time using a three pointer from Kayla Burchill before the Hawks took a 30-27 lead on five straight points and never looked back. That mini run for the Hawks included a three pointer from Lumb and a fast break steal and layup from Mayza.

Vermont would manage to the game twice through the remainder of the second half, the latter of which came at 34-34 thanks to a layup from Nikki Taylor with 8:55 remaining. Hartford answered that by scoring 10 of the next 12 points to take an eight points, 44-36, advantage with 6:16 remaining.

Over the final six minutes, Vermont would only manage to get as close as six points, that coming with just under four minutes remaining with a jumper from Kristina White. Hartford answered that basket by scoring the next five and taking their first double digit lead with all five of those unanswered points coming from Mayza.

The Hawks largest lead, 56-44, of the game came with 33.2 seconds remaining after a string of five straight free throws, while the defense held Vermont without a basket over an 89 second stretch.
