ALBANY, N.Y. – The University of Hartford men's basketball team saw its 2013-14 season come to an end on Sunday night, as it took the No. 2 seeded Stony Brook Seawolves down to the wire but fell, 69-64, in the semifinal round of the America East Championships at SEFCU Arena. Junior
Corban Wroe matched a career-high in scoring as the Hawks finish at 17-16, posting a winning record for the second-straight season.
Stony Brook (23-9) will advance to the America East Championship on Saturday as it hosts the fourth-seeded UAlbany Great Danes at 11:30 a.m. on ESPN2.
Wroe knocked-down the third-most threes for a Hawk this season, burying a career-best seven in just nine attempts from behind the arc. Despite seeing limited minutes in the first after picking up two fouls midway through the period, junior
Mark Nwakamma scored 16 points, grabbing a team-best six rebounds while leading the Hawks with three assists..
Despite not having Nwakamma on the floor for a good chunk of the half, Wroe and fellow Aussie
Taylor Dyson combined for 20 of Hartford's 31 first-half points as the Hawks and Seawolves went blow-for-blow in what proved to be a back-and-forth first half.
The Hawks showed nothing but character in the semifinal battle. Seeing a two-point, halftime deficit balloon up to 16 midway through the final stanza, Hartford didn't roll over. In fact, the squad wound up making it a one possession game in the last minute, but fell short of getting the potential game-tying shot to fall.
A three-pointer from Anthony Jackson with 7:31 put Stony Brook up by 15. But Hartford kept finding answers and stayed within striking distance, eventually closing the gap by scoring 12-straight points. Sparking the Hawks' furious comeback bid was a lay-in from senior
Oren Faulk. Following back-to-back buckets from
Yolonzo Moore II – a jumper and a triple – Wroe cut the deficit to 64-59 on his sixth three-pointer of the night before Nwakamma made it a four-point game with a layup at the 3:40 mark.
On the next possession, Carson Puriefoy made one-of-two from the line to make it a 65-61 score before Dave Coley delivered what proved to be most important bucket of the game. Coming off of four Hartford misses on two possessions, Coley got in the paint and laid one in, extending the Seawolves' margin to six points with 51 seconds remaining.
Hartford still didn't let up, as Wroe buried his seventh and final three of the night to bring it back down to one possession with 44 seconds left. The Hawks called for timeout, but the Seawolves managed to kill the clock and seal the contest with 10 seconds left on a Puriefoy layup.
Puriefoy also finished with a game-high 21 points while Anthony Jackson (14) and Jameel Warney (10) rounded out the Seawolves' top-scorers. Stony Brook shot 56.3-percent (27-of-48) overall, including 64.0-percent (16-of-25) in the final period. The Hawks closed out the game at 40.0-percent (24-of-60) after going just 35.5-percent (11-of-31) in the first half.
The 17 Division I victories are the second-most in program history. The Hawks have reached the semifinals three times in the last four years, but haven't advanced to the title game since making their first run back in 2007-08.
Hartford loses Faulk,
Jeremiah Aska and
Adam Oresky to graduation. Coming off the best season of his career, Faulk is the lone four-year senior on the team. Aska joined the team as a walk-on in 2012-13 while Oresky came on board for the 2013-14 season.
