ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior guard Amber Bepko finished with a team-high 21 points as the University of Hartford women's basketball team dropped a 65-51 decision to top-seeded Albany in the semifinals of the America East Championship presented by SEFCU. Hartford closes out the 2013-14 season with a 13-18 overall record.
Bepko's 21 points represented the only Hawk in double figures as Morgan Lumb and Alyssa Englert each added six points and Alyssa Reaves and Shanise Bultron both chipped in five. As a team, Hartford shot 34 percent from the field making 18-of-53, including 8-of-29 from beyond the three point arc (27.6 percent). The 29 three point attempts for Hartford set a new America East record for three point attempts in a semifinal.
Individually, Bepko made 7-of-13 from the field including 5-of-11 from beyond the arc. Overall in the Hawks two tournament games, Bepko averaged 18.5 points adding her 16 points from the quarterfinals against Maine.
Against the Great Danes, the Hawks trailed in the battle of the boards 38-27 while three players, Lumb, Bepko and La'Trice Hall all finished with four to lead the squad. Englert added five assists to lead Hartford who also missed just one of its 8 attempts from the free throw line.
The first 13 minutes was a seesaw battle with a total of four lead changes and a pair of ties before the Great Danes used a series of 15 unanswered points to take its largest lead of the half 30-17. After Albany opened the game with the first two baskets and a 4-0 advantage, the Hawks rattled off five straight to take their first lead at 5-4 thanks to a fast break opportunity from Bepko who forced the steal and converted on the drive to the hoop.
Albany answered with another rally, this time seven straight, which opened up an 11-5 lead, however the Hawks ended that momentum with back-to-back baskets from Reaves and Bultron, the second of which came on a second chance opportunity. After trading the next three baskets the Hawks sandwiched a lone free throw from Megan Craig with back-to-back three pointers from Bepko which led to a 17-15 lead with 7:55 remaining.
That lead for the Hawks proved to be their last of the game as the Great Danes went on their largest run of the game to open up a 13 point advantage. Hartford closed out the half with a deep three pointer from Englert that came with just four seconds remaining in the opening stanza and provided the 30-20 halftime differential.
Hartford made a trio of rallies in the second half, the first of which pulled the Hawks within seven, the closest they would get in the final 20 minutes. That rally was a set of five straight which came on a three from Bepko and a jumper from Cherelle Moore with 14:55 remaining.
The second run spanned two minutes at the halfway point of the half with Milana Gilbert and La'Trice Hall going back-to-back and pulling their squad within nine with 9:07 remaining. Albany answered that mini run with a layup from Sarah Royals but the Hawks responded with a three pointer from their senior point guard Englert that pulled her team within eight at 50-42.
The Hawks pulled within single digits one final time in the final three minutes thanks to another three pointer from Bepko and a pair of free throws from Lumb, but Albany responded by scoring the final five points of the game providing the final differential, 65-51.
