FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Junior midfielder Sidney Spremullo scored her first goal of the 2014 season as an equalizer in the first half as the University of Hartford women's soccer team dropped its first game of the season 3-1 at Fairfield. Hartford falls to 2-1-1 overall on the season, while Fairfield improves to 3-1-0.

Fairfield struck first in the game, scoring the opening goal in the 21st minute with Ashley Small scoring her first of two goals in the contest. The Hawks answered less than four minutes later when Spremullo took advantage of a Fairfield turnover and after finding herself left open, looped a shot into the goal for the unassisted score.

The Stags game-winning goal came nine minutes into the second period with Cassidy Boegel scoring off a feed from Small, who netted an insurance goal off a corner kick with just under five minutes remaining before the close of regulation.

The Hawks saw three scoring opportunities come back-to-back-to-back in the middle of the second half with two of the attempts coming from senior Chanel Johnson and the final from junior Erica Primovic. Johnson's first attempt in the string of shots came in the 65th minute and was pushed over the crossbar. Primovic followed that shot with one that was blocked by the Stags defense and after regrouping, Johnson fired her second shot in the rally 30 seconds later wide of the net.

Johnson would provide one more scoring opportunity in the second half, that coming in the 76th minute. Her shot was pushed on goal with Stags keeper Kathleen Early collecting her only save of the half and ending the Hartford threat. Johnson finished the game with five total shots, two of which were on goal.

Senior keeper Alison Koerkenmeier collected five total saves over the 90 minutes of action, tying her season high set last game against CCSU. Four of Koerkenmeier's saves came in the opening 45 minutes as she was tested seven total times with five of those first half shots on goal for Fairfield.

The Hartford women's soccer team will close out its season-opening five game road trek on Sunday, Sep. 7 when they travel to Loudonville, N.Y. to face Siena. The Hawks and Saints are schedule for a 1 p.m. opening kickoff in the Sunday afternoon matinee.
