Volleyball Drops Conference Opener to Stony Brook in Four Sets

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The University of Hartford volleyball team dropped its America East Conference opener to the visiting Stony Brook Seawolves 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 24-26, 19-25) on Friday night.  The Hawks were led by freshman outside hitter Katy Henchy who finished with a .214 hitting percentage on a career-high 14 kills in 42 attempts and recorded a new career-best defensively with eight digs.

The Hawks lone winning set came in the second when they battled through 19 ties and eight lead changes. During the set, The Hawks recorded their best hitting of the night with a .302 average on two errors among 43 attacks.

Corrine Horanzy added to Henchy's performance offensively with 10 kills and 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the season.  Sareeta Nethersole contributed with nine kills on the night, tying Kelly McEathron (2000-03) for fifth all time. Jackie Tamburri finished with a .500 hitting percentage with three kills on six attempts while finishing with 41 assists.

Defensively, Horanzy was one of three Hawks to finish with double digit digs, joined by Nethersole who had 15 digs while libero Paola Llerandi added 10.
 

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

·         Sophomore Corrinne Horanzy recorded her fifth double double of the season with her 10th dig in the third set, joining 11 digs.

·         Senior outside hitter Sareeta Nethersole finished with nine kills against the Seawolves, tying Kelly McEathron (2000-03) for fifth all time in kills. She now needs 29 to take over the fourth spot all time from Erin Macro (2006-09).

·         Freshman outside hitter Katy Henchy put up a pair of career-best numbers against the Seawolves, leading the team with 14 kills while adding eight digs, five of which came in the third set alone.
 

SET BREAKDOWN

SET ONE

·         Henchy led the hawks with three kills on six attempts with one error for a .333 hitting percentage.

·         Horanzy and Chandler Goodwin added two kills each.

·         Defensively, the Hawks recorded 12 digs including three each by Nethersole, Horanzy, and Llerandi 

SET TWO

·         The Hawks and Seawolves seesawed back and forth with eight lead changes and 19 ties before deciding the set.

·          Henchy led the offense with seven kills in 13 attempts for a .538 hitting percentage.

·         As a team, the Hawks recorded their best hitting with a .302 hitting percentage in the second set. They combined for 15 kills on 43 attempts with two errors.

·         Goodwin added a .667 hitting percentage with two kills on three attempts, leading all players in the set.

·         Horanzy led the Hawks defensively with five digs. 

SET THREE

·         Henchy recorded five digs to pass her previous career-high. She finished the match with eight total.

·         Kathryn Gawrych led the attack with three kills on five attempts for .600 hitting percentage.

·         Defensively, the Hawks were led by Tamburri who recorded six digs, while leading her squad to their best defensive efforts with 21 digs and three total blocks. 

SET FOUR

·         Tamburri led the Hawks with a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage with two kills.

·         The Hawks combined for seven digs led by Nethersole with four.

·         The Hawks and Seawolves saw five tie scores throughout the set.

UP NEXT:
The Volleyball team will continue their home stand on Sunday September 28 as they host the Quinnipiac Bobcats at 1 p.m. Hartford looks to maintain their dominance in the all-time series against the Bobcats, having won 13 of the last 14 meetings. Overall the Hawks own a 15-3 record.
