THE LEAD:
Katy Henchy posted a career-high 16 kills and Paulina Modestow added 16 as well, but Iona came from behind to post a 3-1 victory over the Hartford volleyball team on Monday night. Claire Archibald led the Gaels with 14 kills, while three different players finished with double-digit digs for Iona.

SET ONE:
Behind the strength of a six-kill effort from Modestow and four kills from Henchy, the Hawks coasted to a 25-18 victory in the opening set. Iona earned the first point of the match on a Karly White kill, but the Hawks put up four-straight points and went on to extend that lead to 11-4. Four of Henchy's kills came during that stretch as Hartford continued to build its lead. Going up by as many as seven at 17-10, the Gaels crept came back to close the gap to four (22-18) before Hartford rattled off a set-ending, 3-0 run using a pair of Hawk errors and a kill by Kathryn Gawrych.

SET TWO:
The Hawks were outhit in the second set, as they never fully recovered from an early deficit and fell to the Gaels, 25-19. Hartford rallied back from a 7-3 deficit to knot up the score at 7-7, but Iona picked up momentum again and rebuilt its lead to 11-7. Extending that advantage to 17-11, the Hawks managed to put up four-straight points and come within two at 17-15. The remainder of the match belonged to Iona, though, as the visiting squad scored eight of the final 12 points to tie up the match at one set apiece. Archibald slammed seven kills to pace the Gaels, while Modestow led the Hawks with five.

SET THREE:
In the third set, the Hawks battled back from slim deficits to tie up the score four times. The fourth tie, a 12-12 deadlock, proved to be the final of the set, as Iona quickly broke the score open by taking a 17-13 advantage. The Hawks managed to cut their deficit in half, but the remainder of the match belonged to the Gaels. Holding a 19-17 lead, Iona used three kills to put the set away at 25-20.
SET FOUR:
In the fourth, the two teams came even out of the gate, with the Hawks trailing 7-5 after a Henchy kill. But Iona caught fire, running off nine straight points to push the lead to 16-5. The Hawks fought back, cutting it to seven after a block by Henchy and Gawrych made it 18-11, but the deficit was too great to overcome, as Iona finished off the victory.

UP NEXT:
The Hawks continue their homestand with a Friday night match against Stony Brook at Hartford Volleyball Gym. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. against the Seawolves.
