THE LEAD: The Hartford volleyball team had one of its strongest offensive performances of the season, but Stony Brook countered with a tremendous offensive night of its own to post a 3-0 win on Friday night.
Paulina Modestow and
Katy Henchy each had 12 kills to lead all players on the evening. Four different Seawolves had at least nine kills in the match.
SET ONE: Four kills from four different players helped the Hawks jump out of the gates with a 7-4 lead. Stony Brook clawed back into the set, though, and broke open a 10-10 deadlock by taking an 18-14 lead. Each of the Seawolves' eight points were scored on kills during that stretch, as Kathy Fletcher slammed three of her set-best five to help the visiting squad build its advantage. Stony Brook finished off the set by scoring seven of the final 12 points to secure the victory by a 25-19 final.
SET TWO:The second set went down to the wire, as a Stephanie McFadden kill followed by an attacking error on Hartford allowed Stony Brook to sneak past the Hawks, 26-24. Hartford faced an early deficit, but clawed back to take a 9-8 advantage. Behind the strength of a service ace and kill from Mangual, and a Henchy block and kill, the Hawks built their lead to four points at 14-10. Stony Brook responded, though, as it scored six of the next seven points to erase its deficit and take a 16-15 advantage. The lead changed two more times, but the Hawks' 19-18 advantage proved to be their last in the set. Modestow had eight kills in the second set to pace all hitters.
SET THREE:The Hawks and Seawolves came out even once again to start the third, with Hartford owning an early 7-6 lead thanks to an
Erinn Lavelle ace. But Stony Brook came alive, delivering five of the next six points to take an 11-8 edge. The Hawks rebounded with a block by
Rachel Moll, but SBU continued to build on its lead and finished off the set with back-to-back aces that clipped the net but fell on Hartford's side. Henchy had four kills in the final stanza to lead the Hawks.
UP NEXT: The Hawks return to the Hartford Volleyball Gym on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. for a conference matchup against UMBC. The match will be the annual Dig Pink contest, raising awareness about breast cancer, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink. Admission is free for all spectators.
