Stony Brook Rallies Past Volleyball, 3-1

THE BASICS:

THE LEAD: 
The University of Hartford volleyball team got a match-high 15 kills from Katy Henchy and 10 from Paulina Modestow, but Stony Brook held off the Hawks for a 3-1 victory on Sunday. It marked the final conference game of the season for the Hawks. 

SET ONE:
Stony Brook got out to a quick 5-1 lead in the first, but the Hawks came soaring back with four straight, culminating with kills from Henchy and Asha Wafer, to tie things up at 5. After the teams traded points to 6-6, Stony Brook responded with five straight to open an 11-6 advantage. The squads traded points to a 16-10 Seawolves lead, then Hartford rolled off six straight, including a pair of kills for Henchy to tie things up at 16. The teams traded points to 18-all, then SBU delivered six straight to pull away and take the opening stanza.

SET TWO:
The Seawolves carried over the momentum into the second, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and stretching it to 13-4 early in the set. The Hawks rallied for three straight, culminating with a block from Astrid Mangual and Kathryn Gawrych, to make it 13-7. The teams went back-and-forth to a 17-11 score, but SBU pulled away at the finish and delivered a 25-14 victory to take a 2-0 lead.

SET THREE:
The Hawks came back with authority in the third, jumping out to a 4-1 lead and stretching it to 7-3 on a Paola Llerandi ace. The teams then delivered 10 straight sides out to make it 12-8, and continued to trade points to a 13-10 score. Hartford then delivered the key blow, scoring seven of the next eight points, two on Henchy kills and two on blocks by Henchy and Rachel Moll, to make it 20-11. The Seawolves were able to cut it to 22-16, but the Hawks rallied with three of the last four points, a kill from Henchy finishing off the set 25-17.
 
SET FOUR:
The two teams started the set even at 3-3, but Stony Brook responded with six straight points to open up a 9-3 edge. The Hawks were able to chip away, cutting it to 11-9 on a Modestow kill, but Stony Brook pulled away after that, finishing it off with a 25-14 win.
 
UP NEXT: 
Hartford will now be out of action until the team plays host to Yale in the season finale on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at 5 p.m. at the Hartford Volleyball Gym.
