THE BASICS:

RESULT: Manhattan 1, Hartford 0
RECORDS: Hartford (1-1-0); Manhattan (2-1-0)
LOCATION: Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium (West Hartford, Conn.)
THE LEAD: The University of Hartford women's soccer team held a commanding 21-3 shot advantage over Manhattan, but it was the Jaspers that came out on top on Sunday as they found the back of the net in the 77th minute at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. Lizzy Carlson headed in the lone goal of the game from six-yards out, using a pass from Nicole Aylmer to lock up the victory. Hartford also held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

·         The Hawks came out firing out of the gates, and proved to be the dominant team early on. In the ninth minute, Hartford generated three scoring opportunities, all within a 74-second span. The first look of the match came from Sidney Spremullo, who saw her clear look from inside of the 18-yard box get saved by Manhattan keeper Kristen Skonieczny.

·         The attack continued, as less than one minute later, Spremullo found herself with another look from just in front of the goal. That blast was blocked by the Jaspers' defense to force a corner kick. Out of that set play, junior Tori Tripp got her head on the serve, but her attempt went just high of the crossbar.

·         Hartford had two more quality looks in the closing minutes of the first half, the first of which came on a Julia Carr attempt in the 34th minute. Taking a centering pass from Elise Galipo, her attempt missed just high of the crossbar. With 4:49 to go, redshirt-senior Stephanie Santos forced Skonieczny into action as the Manhattan keeper had to leap to make a stop on her shot from 28-yards out.

·         Out of the intermission, the Hawks picked up right where they left off in the first half. Keeping Manhattan without a shot until the 62nd minute, Hartford continued to be the aggressor as it took the six shots of the period. Following a look from Aaliyah Ingram that went just high of the crossbar in the opening minutes, Tripp saw her blast from outside of the box bounce off the outside of the right goal post. Less than three minutes later, Carr had her shot from point-blank range saved by Skonieczny.

·         Manhattan found the back of the net on what proved to be its only shot on goal of the afternoon in the 77th minute. On a reset following a Hawks' foul, Nicole Aylmer sent a forward pass down the middle of the field to Lizzy Carlson, who played ball off the bounce from inside of the six-yard box and headed the game-winning tally over the head of Hartford keeper Jessica Jurg.

·         The Hawks produced two more shots in the final seven minutes, but neither would be put on target.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

·         The Hawks held commanding advantages in both shots (21-3) and corner kicks (5-1), including respective 9-0 and 3-0 first-half edges

·         Manhattan was held without a shot for the match's first 61-plus minutes; the Jaspers' goal was their only shot on goal for the entire contest

·         Freshman Julia Carr paced Hartford offensively with seven total shots

·         Four different Hawks each recorded one shot on goal, forcing Manhattan keeper Kristen Skonieczny to make four saves on the afternoon

·         Hartford keeper Jessica Jurg did not record a save as Manhattan's lone shot on goal was the game-winner

NEWS & NOTES:

·         Hartford is 1-1 against teams from the MAAC this season as it defeated Siena, 4-1, in its 2015 debut last Sunday.

·         The Hawks dip to 1-1 in the all-time series against Manhattan. Prior to Sunday's matchup, the lone meeting between the two teams was a 3-0 Hartford victory 11 years ago in 2004.

UP NEXT:.
The Hawks hit the road for the first time in 2015 as they head to New Rochelle, N.Y. on Thursday September 3 to battle Iona, their third-straight opponent from the MAAC. The Hawks and Gaels are scheduled to kick-off at 4 p.m.
