Massey Extends Hawks' Unbeaten Streak to Six with Win at Wagner

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 1, Wagner 0
RECORDS: Hartford (6-1-1), Wagner (1-7-1
LOCATION: Wagner College Stadium (Staten Island, N.Y.)

THE LEAD: Redshirt-junior Caroline Massey scored for the third time in as many games on Sunday afternoon to lift the University of Hartford women's soccer team to a 1-0 defeat of Wagner. With the win, the Hawks improve their unbeaten streak to six games, as they have gone 5-0-1 since a one-goal loss to Manhattan last month. Between the posts, junior Jessica Jurg made four saves to earn her fifth shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

·         Massey got the scoring done early for the Hawks, as she found the back of the net just 100 seconds after the opening whistle. After freshman Ashley Claud tested Wagner keeper Kaitlin Flaherty 65 seconds in, Massey beat the Seahawks' defense with a low shot to the right post to give the visiting squad the early one-goal advantage.

·         Hartford had a chance to build on its lead on two more occasions throughout the remainder of the match. Freshman Julia Carr, who had previously forced Flaherty into action with a shot on goal in the 15th minute, hit the crossbar at the 39:26 mark of the first half.

·         Midway through the second half, Carr produced another scoring opportunity for her team, but in the 60th minute, her attempt was marked high of the target.

·         In the second half, Jurg made two stops to preserve the shutout in the 57th and 90th minutes. The Seahawks' final attempt came off the boot of Johanna Konrad, but Hartford's keeper easily made the save to secure the win. Prior to that final attempt, Amber Coco had a near miss for the Seahawks, but her shot in the 86th minute hit the crossbar.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

·         The Hawks bombarded Wagner's defense, firing 16 shots, including 10 in the decisive first half

·         Defensively, Hartford held Wagner to seven shots, with four of those attempts reaching the target

·         The Seahawks held the edge in corner kicks on Sunday at 6-4

·         Massey's goal 1:40 into Sunday's match marks the earliest scoring play of the 2015 season for the Hawks

NEWS & NOTES:

·         Redshirt-junior Massey has scored each of the Hawks' two goals this season, as she netted her team's lone goal in a 1-1 draw against Yale on Thursday before scoring the game-winning tally in Sunday's win at Wagner.

·         Massey has tallied one marker in each of the Hawks' last three games, and is ranked third on the team in goals (3) and fourth in points (7).

·         With Sunday's defeat of Wagner, Hartford extends its unbeaten streak to six games.

·         The Hawks are 5-0-1 during their current unbeaten streak, with each of their five wins coming by way of shutouts.

·         With her fifth shutout of the season, Jurg, a junior keeper, improves her career total to 19.

·         The Hawks' 6-1-1 start marks the program's best since 2011, when they 7-0-1 to start the season.

·         Hartford's current six-game unbeaten streak is its longest since 2012. That season, the Hawks went unbeaten for a stretch of eight games, going 7-0-1 during that stretch.

·         Hartford improves to 1-0-1 against Wagner.

UP NEXT:
The Hawks remain on the road for their next contest as they take on their second-straight opponent from the Northeast Conference in Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday, Sept. 24. Kickoff from Teaneck, N.J., is scheduled for 7 p.m.
