FDU Snaps Women's Soccer Six-Game Unbeaten Streak

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 0, Fairleigh Dickinson 1
RECORDS: Hartford (6-2-1), FDU (5-5-0)
LOCATION: University Stadium (Teaneck, N.J.)

THE LEAD: An early Fairleigh Dickinson goal by Carly Tice in the sixth minute doomed the University of Hartford women's soccer team, as the Knights went on to end the Hawks' six-game unbeaten streak by the tune of a 1-0 final at University Stadium in Teaneck, N.J. Hartford held a 14-11 shot advantage throughout the match, but could only muster three shots on goal. Junior Jessica Jurg recorded a season-best five saves between the pipes for the Hawks, who were playing on the road for just the third time this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

·         The Knights reached the scoreboard before the Hawks had a chance to generate a shot attempt in the match. In the sixth minute, Hartford came up with a pair of impressive saves on shots by FDU's Rachel Hoekstra and Tice, but the third shot of the series proved to be the dagger.  Jurg turned away Rachel Hoekstra's attempt before Tice's shot just seconds later was booted away by Hartford's Emma Donnelly on the goal line. The deflection, which went right back to Tice, slipped past the Hawks' defense and provided the Knights with the early 1-0 edge.

·         After FDU's strike, Hartford had three scoring opportunities leading into the halftime break, but was unable to cash in. In the 14th minute, freshman Julia Carr's attempt was snagged by Knights' Felicia Burr before junior Aaliyah Ingram also had her shot saved by the keeper. Burr was forced into action in the final minute of the half, but she rose to the challenge on a shot by Katie Connolly.

·         The Hawks held possession often in the closing minutes and kept up the pressure, but were unable to cash-in on some late attempts. Six of the visiting team's 14 total shot attempts came within the last 15 minutes of the contest. With 5:30 left, Kristen McAdams crossed a ball into the box to Aaliyah Ingram. Her header went just wide of the target. Sidney Spremullo's chance from on top of the box with 12 seconds left was blocked by FDU as the home squad came away with the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

·         Hartford held a 14-11 shot advantage over FDU, but only managed to put three of its shots on goal

·         The Hawks also held the edge in corner kicks at 3-2

·         Junior Jessica Jurg collected five saves, a season-high, in the match

·         The Hawks totaled seven saves as Donnelly and Ingram recorded team saves at the goal line in the sixth and 78th minutes, respectively

·         For FDU, Burr made stops on each of the three shots on goal she faced

·         Carr and McAdams each recorded three shots to pace the Hawks

NEWS & NOTES:

·         Thursday's setback marks just the second time this season that the Hawks have been shutout as they suffered a 1-0 loss to Manhattan last month (Aug. 30)

·         Hartford entered the match riding a six-game unbeaten streak, which featured a 5-0-1 record with each of its victories coming by way of shutouts

·         Jessica Jurg's five saves against the Knights were a season-best for the keeper

·         Despite falling to FDU in each of the last two seasons, the Hawks still hold the upperhand in the series at 5-2-1

UP NEXT:
The Hawks open up the America East portion of their schedule on Sunday afternoon at home against Maine. The contest is part of a soccer doubleheader as the Hartford men open up the day by hosting the Saint Francis Red Flash at 12 noon. The women are slated to kick off from Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium at 3 p.m.
