Hawks Collar UMBC, 1-0, Clinch America East Postseason Berth

 THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 1, UMBC 0
RECORDS: Hartford (6-7-3, 2-1-2 America East); UMBC (4-7-3, 0-5-0 ACC)
LOCATION: Retriever Soccer Park (Catonsville, Md.)

THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford men's soccer team (6-7-3, 2-1-2 America East) knocked off UMBC, 1-0, at Retriever Soccer Park on Saturday night. The Hawks clinched a berth in the America East postseason with the victory. Senior forward Jeff Tryon netted the game's only goal on a header in the 76th minute. Freshman keeper Jimmy Slayton logged eight saves to earn his seventh shutout of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Tryon, a senior captain, broke the deadlock in the 76th minute when he headed in a goal off a free kick by fellow senion captain Udi Cohen. It was Tryon's fourth goal of the season and put the Hawks on top, 1-0.
  • Freshman keeper Jimmy Slayton finished with eight saves, including a diving stop on a penalty kick in the 59th minute.

FROM THE SIDELINES:

Head coach Tom Poitras on Slayton:
"This was a big win tonight in a really tough place to win. Jimmy Slayton was man of the match with some key saves, including a key save on the PK."

Poitras on the win:
"I am really impressed with our team's effort, mentality and focus. We stuck to our plan and got an important America East road win. It was big for our senior captains to connect and get a quality goal"

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Tryon's goal was his team-best fourth of the season.
  • Cohen's assist was his team-best fifth of the season.
  • Slayton recorded his seventh clean sheet of the year and leads the conference in shutouts.
  • UMBC keeper Billy Heavner finished with one save and one goal allowed.
  • UMBC led in shots (21-7), shots on goal (8-2), corner kicks (7-4) and fouls (8-20).

NEWS & NOTES:

  • Hartford (eight points) qualified for the America East postseason and pushed the Retrievers the brink of playoff elimination. The Retrievers (zero points) have two games remaining against Vermont (six points) and Stony Brook (nine points). With victories in their final two games, the Retrievers would pull even with the Catamounts in the America East standings and hold the tiebreaker. However, if UVM picks up a single point in either of its final two games against UMBC and New Hampshire (six points), the Catamounts would eliminate UMBC.
  • The Hawks (eight points) currently sit in third place in the conference standings among playoff-eligible teams. Should Hartford maintain that position, the team would be in line to host a quarterfinal playoff game. However, the Hawks are within striking distance of No. 1 Albany (10 points) and No. 2 Stony Brook (eight points) of grabbing one of the top two spots in the postseason and earning a quarterfinal bye.
  • Hartford's last trip to the playoffs came in 2014, when the Hawks finished as runners-up (against UMBC) in the America East title game.

UP NEXT:
Hartford returns home for its final non-conference test of the season, against Yale (2-6-2, 1-1-1 Ivy League) on Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs have dropped three of their last four and have been shut out in all six of their losses this season. The Hawks are 7-12-2 all time against in-state rival Yale, which is undefeated in the past seven matchups. The teams haven't met since 2005, and Hartford's last series win came in 1998.
