THE LEAD:
Jason Dunne's three-pointer with 2.3 seconds remaining lifted the Hartford men's basketball team to a 65-63 win over Boston College on Friday night. Dunne finished with a career-high 25 points in addition to leading the team with seven rebounds in the victory. It marked Hartford's first-ever victory over an Atlantic Coast Conference foe.
Â
Jalen Ross added 16 points and
J.R. Lynch scored 10 in the victory, as the Hawks gritted out the win. Lynch and
Jack Hobbs each delivered four assists in the win, while
Hassan Attia blocked four shots and grabbed four rebounds in just 14 minutes.
Â
A.J. Turner led the Eagles with 13 points and Connar Tava added 12, while Mo Jeffers contributed eight points and eight rebounds. The Hawks held leading scorer Jerome Robinson to 2-for-13 shooting and just four points.
FIRST HALF:
The Hawks started out slow on the offensive end, with the Eagles knocking down a pair of triples to open a 14-4 lead early on. A Ross triple snapped that run, but the Eagles got two back to put the lead at 16-7.
Â
At that juncture, the Hawks locked down on the defensive end and started to pick up the offense, going on a 9-0 run to knot the score up at 16. During the stretch, the Hawks held the Eagles 0-for-8 from the floor, and got four free throws from Ross and a clutch three from Hobbs.
Â
BC stopped that run, and pushed the lead back to 23-18 on a three-ball at the 2:37 mark, but the Hawks delivered a strong end-of-half rally. Hartford got four stops on defense, hit four free throws, got a nice hook shot from
George Blagojevic and a triple from Dunne to enter the locker room on a 9-0 run for a 27-23 edge at the break. Hartford held Robinson scoreless with five turnovers in the stanza.
SECOND HALF:
The Eagles came out of the break with five straight points to regain the lead, 28-27, but the Hawks responded with a 14-2 run to increase the lead to double digits for the first time. Dunne was the main catalyst, delivering eight of Hartford's points in the rally, including a pair of three-balls, to make it a 41-30 lead after a Ross jumper at the 15:08 mark.
Â
The lead then bounced between six and 10 over the next several minutes, with the visitors holding on to a 51-41 advantage at the 9:16 mark after two free throws for Dunne. But the Eagles kept chipping away, and got it down to four, 53-49, with 6:17 on the clock. Needing a big shot, the Hawks got it from Hobbs, as he coolly drilled a right-wing three to put the Hawks ahead 56-49 with 4:33 on the clock.
Â
But the Eagles turned up the defensive pressure and turned defense into offense, delivering an 8-0 run to regain the lead, the final points on a transition three from Jordan Chatman that made it 57-56.
Â
Ross came right back with a three-ball to put the Hawks up two, but Hartford was whistled for an intentional foul on the ensuing possession, and BC converted both free throws and a jumper to move ahead, 61-59. Hartford delivered another answer with a clutch three from Lynch, but the Eagles surged ahead on a jumper by Robinson that made it 63-62 Eagles.
Â
Hartford called timeout with 9.1 seconds on the clock, and set up the play with Lynch driving to his left. The point guard flung a high pass to Hobbs in the corner, and the junior went up high to keep it alive, then found Dunne on the right wing to set up the game winner.
