Hampton Overcomes Hawks Hit Barrage

Boiling Springs, N.C. – The University of Hartford softball team rapped out a season-high 13 hits, but Hampton delivered the key hits when it needed them to post a 5-2 victory over the Hawks on Sunday. It marked the final game of the Runnin' Bulldog  Softball Tournament, hosted by Gardner-Webb.

Five different players – Kylie Dazalla, Jenice Aloyo, Sawyer Fried, Dani Regina and Elizabeth Newkirk – each had two hits for the Hawks. Alex Saharek delivered a sac fly and scored a run in a losing effort. Allyson Babinsack struck out four in a complete-game victory for Hampton.

"It was a very productive weekend, with each game showing progress and improvement to get where we need to be," head coach Sarah Kalka said. "Babinsack is a very good pitcher, and for us to record 13 hits off her shows a lot of promise for our offense. We just need to start stringing them together and keep chipping away pitch by pitch."

Hampton got on the board in the bottom of the second, when Ashley Grassini delivered a home run to center to make it a 1-0 game.  In the third, it was a two-out rally that added a pair of additional runs, as Babinsack hit a two-run double to right center for a 3-0 lead.  Kayla DeSchepper added an RBI single in the fourth to make it 4-0.

The Hawks rallied in the top of the sixth. Saharek led off the inning with a single to left, and Regina followed with a single to put runners at the corners. After Regina stole second, Newkirk brought Saharek home with a single to make it 4-1. But Babinsack buckled down, and got two strikeouts and a lineout to end the threat.

After the Pirates got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, Hartford struck again in the top of the seventh. Regina started it with an infield single, and moved to second on a sacrifice. Lexi Wilkerson followed with a single to put runners at the corners, and Saharek brought home the second Hartford run with a sac fly to center. But a groundout followed to end the game and the Pirates prevailed 5-2.

The Hawks will return to the field next weekend with five games in three days at the Longwood Spring Fling, facing host Longwood three times and Monmouth twice.  The weekend opens with a Friday night contest against the Lancers that will commence at 5:30 p.m.
