Game Recap: Baseball |

Hawks Fall to 6-3 After Two Close Losses in Doubleheader at UCSB

THE BASICS:

GAME ONE RESULT: UCSB 7, Hartford 4

GAME TWO RESULT: UCSB 2, Hartford 1
LOCATION: Caesar Uyesaka Stadium (Santa Barbara, Cali.)
RECORDS: Hartford (6-3); UCSB (11-3)

THE LEAD:

The Hartford baseball team fell short in both games of its doubleheader, dropping the series to UC-Santa Barbara with two close losses on the day.

GAME ONE BREAKDOWN: Hartford made a late rally in the ninth inning but could not fully close the deficit in a 7-4 loss. Chris DelDebbio and Ben Bengtson collected two hits each and Erik Ostberg added an RBI in the losing effort. JJ Muno had three hits and drove in four runs for the Gauchos, including a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

UCSB jumped out to a quick start in the bottom of the first inning, pushing a run across on a sac fly to give the Gauchos at 1-0 lead early. The run in the opening frame was just the second allowed by Kyle Gauthier all season.
Hartford couldn't answer in the top of the second, and UCSB started to pull ahead in the bottom half. The Gauchos plated a run on an RBI single with one out, but Hartford picked up an out on a bunt on the next play. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases, and Muno hit a grand slam to give UCSB a 6-0 in the second.
The Hawks threatened to score in the fourth after DelDebbio and Bengtson singled to put two men on with two away, but Hartford couldn't plate a run. Bengtson added a two-out triple in the sixth, but the Hawks could not push him across either.
After adding a run in the eighth to get on the scoreboard, a walk for Chris Sullivan was followed by singles from Ashton Bardzell and Nick Campana to load the bases with no outs in the ninth. Joe Roberti came through in the clutch with an RBI single to make it a 7-2 game. A wild pitch brought another run in, and MacKinnon drove in Campana on a sac fly to make it 7-4, but that was as close as the Hawks would get.

GAME ONE INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Bengtson continued his torrid pace at the plate, adding two more hits, including a triple, in his game one performance.
Bardzell collected his first two hits (both singles) as a Hawk today in his second career start.

GAME TWO BREAKDOWN: David Drouin and Collin Ferguson were terrific through a combined eight innings pitched, but the Hawks fell to a late UCSB rally in a 2-1 loss. Billy Walker added an RBI single in the affair.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The game was a true pitcher's duel, and Drouin was in control early for the Hawks, working out of jams and holding UCSB scoreless through 5 1/3 innings.
Walker stepped up big time for the Hawks, driving in TJ Ward from second on an RBI single to give Hartford a 1-0 lead in the seventh inning.
Ferguson gave the Hawks an important 2 2/3 innings out of the bullpen to hold the lead together for Hartford.
John LaRossa came on for the save in the ninth, but UCSB put together a ninth inning rally after an error and a sac fly to steal the victory from the Hawks.

GAME TWO INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Drouin kept up his stellar work on the mound, holding UCSB scoreless in his start today. For the season, Drouin has allowed just two runs in 17 innings pitched.
Ferguson shined in his 2 2/3 innings of work out of the bullpen. He has not allowed a run in four appearances this season.
