Bearcats Take Pair From Baseball

THE BASICS:

GAME 1 RESULT: Binghamton 5, Hartford 3
GAME 2 RESULT: Binghamton 12, Hartford 1
LOCATION: Vestal, N.Y. (Varsity Field)
RECORDS: Hartford (21-11, 5-6 America East); Binghamton (13-18, 9-2)

THE LEAD:

Binghamton notched 12 hits in each game to propel the Bearcats to a pair of wins over the Hartford baseball team on Saturday. Erik Ostberg hit his first home run of the season in game one.

GAME 1: BINGHAMTON 5, HARTFORD 3
Hartford scored three runs in the top of the fourth, but Binghamton netted one in the bottom of the fourth and four in the bottom of the fifth to emerge with a 5-3 victory over the Hawks. Aaron Wilson, David MacKinnon and T.J. Ward each had two hits in the loss, while Sebastian DeMauro pitched two scoreless innings out of the pen for Hartford.
 
Nick Wegmann and Rob Hardy pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for the Bearcats, while four different players tallied two hits apiece for the home squad.

HOW THEY SCORED, GAME 1:
• Chris DelDebbio got the scoring going with an RBI single to centerfield to plate MacKinnon in the top of the third.
• Ostberg followed, and ripped a Jake Cryts offering over the wall in right field for a two-run home run to put the lead at 3-0.
• Binghamton came right back with a run on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the frame to cut it to 3-1.
• The Bearcats followed that up with four runs on four hits and a passed ball in the fourth to gain a 5-3 lead.
• Binghamton's relievers took over from there, holding the Hawks to just two hits in putting up zeroes the rest of the way.

GAME 2: BINGHAMTON 12, HARTFORD 1
Binghamton scored three runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead, then took control with six runs in the bottom of the fifth to post a 12-1 victory in game two. Paul Rufo went 2-for-2 with five RBI, and CJ Krowiak went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the win. Mike Bunal went the full seven innings, giving up four hits and four walks with five strikeouts and one run allowed.
 
David MacKinnon had an RBI triple in a losing effort for the Hawks. Brian Murphy was carded with the loss for Hartford.
 
HOW THEY SCORED, GAME 2:
• Binghamton got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the second, doing so on four hits in the frame.
• Reed Gamache made it a 4-0 lead for the home team with a solo home run, his first of the season, in the third.
• MacKinnon put the Hawks on the board with an RBI triple that scored Wilson to make it 4-1.
• Binghamton plated six runs on four hits and two errors in the fifth, then added a pair more on Rufo's two-run double in the bottom of the sixth.
