Hawks Shutout UMass Lowell 6-0 to Win Weekend Series 2-1

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 6, UMass Lowell 0
LOCATION: LeLacheur Park (Lowell, Mass.)
RECORDS: Hartford (18-6, 4-2 AE); UMass Lowell (9-13, 1-5 AE)

THE LEAD:
Brian Murphy and John LaRossa shined on the mound for the Hartford baseball team, as the pair combined to shut out UMass Lowell en route to a 6-0 Hawks win on Saturday afternoon. The win allowed the Hawks to take the weekend series 2-1.

Erik Ostberg led the way on offense with a pair of RBI base hits, and Nick Campana and Sebastian DiMauro each added an RBI single.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
·         Hartford got off to another quick start, taking a 1-0 lead in the opening inning on an RBI double from Ostberg that scored Aaron Wilson. Ostberg would add an RBI single in the third that scored Wilson again, who singled this time, to extend the lead to 2-0 for the Hawks.
·         Brian Murphy was sharp through his first three frames on the day, holding UMass Lowell to just one hit while striking out three.
·         The River Hawks managed to put runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but Murphy maintained control and managed to escape each jam unscathed.
·         The Hawks picked up an insurance run in the seventh after a single by Campana to lead off the inning. Dalton Ruch bunted Campana over to second, and DiMauro smacked an RBI single up the middle to extend the advantage. DiMauro would score on an errant throw after a single from David MacKinnon, which pushed the lead to 4-0.
·         Murphy wound up going 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out four. John LaRossa came on in relief and retired the side to end the seventh, and then worked his way out of a jam in the eighth.
·         Hartford added two more runs after a throwing error for UMass Lowell brought in run number five, and then an RBI groundout by Campana made it 6-0 in the seventh.
·         LaRossa stayed on to pitch through the ninth inning and retired the side, lifting Hartford to a 6-0 victory and a series win over UMass Lowell.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
·         Thanks to strong work on the mound by Hartford's pitchers this afternoon, the Hawks picked up their third shutout of the season. The previous two came against Villanova (March 25) and Radford (March 4).
·         Ostberg has been a model of consistency at the plate for the Hawks in recent games, registering at least one hit in 12 of his last 14 contests.  The sophomore has driven in ten runs and drawn 13 walks in that span.

NEXT UP:

The Hawks get a two-day break from action before returning home to face Sacred Heart at  Fiondella Field on Tuesday afternoon, and then the group will make the short trip to Storrs to take on UConn on Wednesday afternoon.
