Hawks Defeat Huskies 4-3 in Afternoon Affair at Fiondella Field

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 4, UConn 3
LOCATION: Fiondella Field (West Hartford, Conn.)
RECORDS: Hartford (19-6, 4-2 AE); UConn (13-13, 1-1 AAC)

THE LEAD:
After falling behind early in the contest, the Hartford baseball team battled back to complete a 4-3 victory over UConn at Fiondella Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Erik Ostberg came up with a crucial RBI single and Chris DelDebbio added a sac fly to help the Hawks earn the victory. Sam McKay came out of the bullpen to toss three scoreless innings and Collin Ferguson shut the door in the ninth for the save. Joe DeRoche-Duffin hit a two-run homer for the Huskies.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
·         It was the Huskies who got off to a quick start in the first inning, grabbing a two-run lead on a home run from Joe DeRoche-Duffin to take a 2-0 lead into the bottom half of the first.
·         UConn managed to keep the Hawks off the board until the fourth inning, when the Hawks pushed a run across on a throwing error. Back-to-back two-out singles from Chris Sullivan and TJ Ward gave Hartford a scoring opportunity with two away, and Dalton Ruch reached first and advanced to second on a throwing error to make it a 2-1 game.
·         Hartford added another run in the fifth inning to tie the score at two after back–to-back singles by Aaron Wilson and David MacKinnon put both men on, and a sac fly from Chris Sullivan brought in Wilson to knot it up at two apiece.
·         After Justin Cashman hurled the opening two innings, Sam McKay spelled the freshman and went three very strong innings out of the bullpen. McKay tossed three scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and striking out one.
·         The Hawks jumped out in front with a 4-2 lead on a clutch RBI single. After base hits by Wilson and DelDebbio, Ostberg came to plate and slapped a single the other way to left to score Wilson. Chris Sullivan would earn an RBI on a bases loaded walk to give Hartford a two-run lead.
·         The Huskies added a run back on a solo home run to right field form Bryan Daniello in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 4-3. With a runner on first, Collin Ferguson came on with two outs in the frame and picked up a strikeout on three pitches. Ferguson wrapped the game up in the ninth to lift the Hawks to a 4-3 victory over the in-state rival Huskies.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
·         The Hawks have now won three straight matchups with UConn, dating back to the 2014 season. The Hawks last fell to the Huskies at Fiondella Field in a 9-1 loss on March 26, 2013.
·         Wilson added three more hits and a steal this afternoon to continue what has been a strong campaign from the senior. The second baseman is currently in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak, adding a double, home run, two RBIs and five steals in that time.
·         Collin Ferguson continues a dominant season out of the bullpen by earning his fifth save of the year in 1 1/3 scoreless innings against UConn. Ferguson has allowed just one run all season in 14 1/3 innings pitched, good for a 0.63 ERA. The sophomore adds 18 strikeouts, punching out at least one batter in all but one of his 10 appearances.

NEXT UP:

The Hawks now prepare for one of their biggest weekend matchups of the season when Hartford invites Stony Brook for a three-game set at Fiondella Field. A doubleheader opens play on Saturday at noon, and the finale starts at noon on Sunday.
