THE LEAD:
The University of Hartford men's lacrosse team had its five-game win streak spoiled by Vermont on Saturday afternoon, as the Catamounts came away with a 13-4 victory. The loss was the first for the Hawks since March 26, when they fell to nationally-ranked UAlbany, 13-9.
With a 3-2 mark in the America East and one regular-season contest remaining, the Hawks continue to jockey for position in a tight, America East Championship race. Hartford is currently tied with Vermont for third place as the top-four teams in the league earn berths. Prior to the game, Hartford honored its five seniors –
Zack Jones,
Torrey Martone,
Ty Schuldt,
Jake Vogl and
Dylan White – who were playing their final home game at Al-Marzook Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Vermont, took a 2-0 lead with a pair of first-quarter scores from Matt Gudas, benefited from a hot second quarter. The Catamounts scored five times during that stretch, with Ian MacKay and Cam Milligan adding two scores each, to take a 7-0 advantage into the halftime break.
- The lead expanded to 9-0 early in the third before Alec Brown used an unassisted score at the 8:16 mark to end the visiting squad's run.
- Vermont went on to score the final three goals of the third, and continued its run into the fourth with a James Barlow score with 12:43 left in the game.
- The Hawks would close the gap down to 13-4 in the final stretch, thanks to unanswered scores from Conor Van Duzer, Jaedon Henderson and Griffin Feiner.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Henderson led the way with two points on one goal and an assist, while Van Duzer reached the scoring column for the second-straight game. Henderson has recorded at least one point in each of the Hawks' 14 games this season.
- Feiner's goal came on a man-up opportunity, as he leads the team with seven man-up scores.
- Despite the losing effort, sophomore faceoff specialist Dylan Protesto was solid inside of the circle with 16 wins in 20 attempts and 12 ground balls.
- Sophomore Ryan Vanderford registered 11 saves between the pipes in three quarters of action. Jones took over the duties for the final 15 minutes, conceding just one goal while tallying five rejections, a career-high.
- Vermont was led defensively by a 14-save, four-goal effort by Jon Kaplan. He spent over 56 minutes in goal before he was relieved by Thomas Stockham (1 save) and Patrick Buono.
- Milligan and McKay each netted a hat trick to pace the Catamounts' offense.
