UML Bests Softball in Pitchers' Duel

THE BASICS:

RESULT: UMass Lowell 1, Hartford 0
LOCATION: Lowell, Mass. (River View Field)
RECORDS: UMass Lowell (10-36, 2-13), Hartford (6-35, 2-9)

WP: Talcik (5-13), LP: Ross (4-13)

THE LEAD:

Vanessa Cooper went 2-for-3, and her double in the fourth led to the only run of the ballgame as UMass Lowell edged the Hartford softball team, 1-0, on Sunday. Kaysee Talcik allowed just two hits and no walks in five shutout innings for the River Hawks to earn the victory.

Bianca Ross was carded with a tough-luck loss, as the righty surrendered just four hits and one walk, striking out three. Five different Hawks registered base hits in the defeat.

HOW THEY SCORED:
• Hartford had its chances early, getting two runners on in both the first and the second, but was unable to score in either frame.
• Ross was dealing out of the gate, holding UMass Lowell without a hit in the first three frames and allowing just one walk in that period.
• UML got its first base knock in the bottom of the fourth, with a leadoff double from Cooper that eventually developed into an RBI groundout to put the home squad up 1-0.
• The Hawks got runners on base in each of the last three frames, but Talcik slammed the door each time to hold on for the River Hawks' shutout victory.

UP NEXT:
Hartford will play host to Maine next weekend for the final home games of the 2016 season. On Saturday, the team will host Hartford Hawks Hits for Hope, helping to raise money for the Connecticut Children's Medical Center and the Hawks' Team IMPACT member, Arley Picard, during their doubleheader against the Black Bears at noon. Sunday will be Senior Day, as the Hawks honor the three players taking part in their final home game –Jenice Aloyo, Peyton Fisher and Sawyer Fried.
