Hawks Split Doubleheader with Stony Brook, Drop Series 2-1

THE BASICS:

GAME ONE RESULT: Hartford 9, Stony Brook 5
GAME TWO RESULT: Stony Brook 2, Hartford 0
LOCATION: Fiondella Field (West Hartford, Conn.)
RECORDS: Hartford (20-8, 5-4 AE); Stony Brook (14-13, 5-2 AE)

THE LEAD:
The Hartford baseball team split a doubleheader with Stony Brook this afternoon, dropping the series to the Sea Wolves 2-1. It was the first series loss for the Hawks since the team was swept at UCSB in March.

GAME ONE BREAKDOWN:
The Hawks bounced back after a loss yesterday to take game one of the doubleheader with a 9-5 victory over the Sea Wolves. The bats were effective through the majority of the game, as the Hawks collected 10 hits.

Ben Bengtson collected three hits and three RBIs, including a three-run bomb, and Chris DelDebbio also added a three-run bomb to lift the squad. Jack Parenty picked up four hits for Stony Brook.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hawks jumped all over starting pitcher Tyler Honahan early, tacking on five runs in the opening frame. Aaron Wilson walked and David MacKinnon singled before DelDebbio stepped up and unleashed a three-run bomb to left to give the Hawks an early 3-0 lead. Bengtson wound up scoring on a wild pitch, and Nick Campana hit a sac fly to push the lead to 5-0 in a huge first inning for the Hawks.
  • Brian Murphy was on a tear to start the game, and wound up striking out seven batters in just 5 2/3 innings.
  • Stony Brook forced its way back into the game with a trio of RBI singles to close the gap to 5-3 in the sixth, but the Hawks responded right away in the bottom of the inning.
  • After singles from Wilson and MacKinnon, Erik Ostberg drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and Bengtson followed that up with his own three-run shot to left to extend Hartford's lead to 9-4.
  • The Sea Wolves added a run in both the seventh and eighth innings, but it wasn't enough, as John LaRossa and Collin Ferguson combined to finish the game off in the eighth and ninth inning to grab a 9-5 win.

GAME ONE INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

DelDebbio picked up his first big fly of the season in today's game. The senior now has seven careers homers.GAME TWO BREAKDOWN: The Hawks struggled to keep the bats going in game two, falling to Stony Brook 2-0 to split the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sam McKay was dealing early on the mound, at one point retiring seven Stony Brook batters in a row.
  • The Sea Wolves struck first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI single to earn their first lead of the day.
  • After the barrage of hits in game one, game two featured a much tighter matchup between the starters, but the Hawks earned a rally opportunity in the fifth. After loading the bases with one down, Erik Ostberg grounded into a double play to kill the scoring chance for Hartford after a single by Aaron Wilson and a pair of walks to David MacKinnon and DelDebbio.
  • Stony Brook added another run in the sixth inning on an RBI double to extend the Sea Wolves' lead to 2-0, and Hartford never managed to fight back, losing 2-0 in seven innings.

UP NEXT:
  • The Hawks stay at home for the next game as the group hosts another in-state battle, this time with Quinnipiac, on Tuesday afternoon. Check in with @HartfordBASE on Twitter for in-game updates and news about the program.
