Binghamton Takes Two from Softball

THE BASICS:

GAME 1 RESULT: Binghamton 9, Hartford 1
GAME 2 RESULT: Binghamton 10, Hartford 2
LOCATION:  Vestal, N.Y. (Baseball Complex)
RECORDS: Hartford (6-43, 2-14 America East), Binghamton (33-13, 14-3)

THE LEAD:

The Binghamton offense used big innings to propel itself past the Hartford softball team on Saturday. It marked the final two regular-season games for both teams, as the Bearcats earned the right to host the 2016 America East Softball Tournament.

GAME 1: BINGHAMTON 9, HARTFORD 1 (5)
Meghan Wynn went 2-for-2 with a double, but Binghamton used a six-run bottom of the fifth inning to take a 9-1 victory in game one of the doubleheader. Crysti Eichner delivered three hits for the Bearcats, while Jessica Rutherford went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.

HOW THEY SCORED, GAME 1:
• The Hawks got on the board first, with Peyton Fisher hitting a leadoff single, moving to second on a Jenice Aloyo sac bunt and coming in to score on Lexi Wilkerson's RBI single to make it 1-0 in the top of the first.
• Binghamton countered with one in the bottom of the first, with an RBI double knotting up the score.
• The score remained that way until the bottom of the third when the Bearcats plated a pair of runs on two hits to make it 3-1.
• Binghamton exploded in the bottom of the fifth, putting together seven hits to plate six runs and end the game after five innings.

GAME 2: BINGHAMTON 10, HARTFORD 2
Rutherford went 2-for-3 with a home run to lift the Bearcats to a win in game two. Griffin McIver added two hits as well for BU.
Cara Martin picked up the win for Binghamton with four hits and a walk allowed in five innings, while Kelsey Bird was carded with the loss for the Hawks.

HOW THEY SCORED, GAME 2:

• Aloyo used her legs to score the first run of the game, reaching on a single, stealing second and third and then coming in on Wilkerson's RBI single to shortstop to make it 1-0 in the first.
• Binghamton knotted things up in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-1.
• The Bearcats plated six runs in the bottom of the third – three on a home run by Rutherford – to push the advantage to 7-1.
• Binghamton added a three-spot in the fourth to move the lead to 10-1.
• Hartford got a run back on an RBI groundout by Elizabeth Newkirk that plated Wynn to make it 10-2, but that was as close as the Hawks would get.

UP NEXT:
Hartford will head back to Binghamton for the America East Tournament next week. The Hawks will be the No. 6 seed in the tourney, and will have a 1:30 p.m. first pitch in the first round on Wednesday against the No. 3 seed, which is still to be determined.
