A penalty kick allowed the visiting UMass Minutemen to steal a 3-2 win in overtime from the University of Hartford men's soccer team at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium on Saturday night. Following a scoreless first half, the two squads bombarded the scoreboard in the second, but senior Andre Morrison's equalizer in the 88th minute was spoiled by Ty Goncalves penalty kick 6:47 into the extra session.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Before the barrage of goals in the second, both sides were quiet in the opening half. The Hawks and Minutemen combined for just four shots during that stretch, none of which produced any scoring threats.
- In the 47th minute, Hartford broke open the deadlock out of a scrum inside of the box. Following a throw-in, junior defender Mike Barry directed a pass to senior Quenton Swift, who blasted a shot from 20-yards out to the far post to make it a 1-0 lead in favor of the Hawks.
- UMass would use a throw-in of its own to counter that goal less than 13 minutes. Casey Hamill took the honors on the throw for the Minutemen, and following another scramble inside of the 18, Gorich was able to head-in the equalizer from short-range in the 60th minute.
- Another set piece provided UMass with a scoring opportunity that it would capitalize on. In the 70th minute, Alex DeSantis served a ball into the box on a corner kick, which was headed home by Josh Jess to put the Minutemen ahead by a 2-1 count.
- As the final minutes of regulation approached, Morrison used some crafty ball-handling skills to put the game-tying marker on the scoreboard. The defender shook off three UMass defenders and blasted a shot over the outstretched hands of the Minutemen keeper from 25 yards out to force overtime with a 2-2 score.
- UMass stole the win in overtime, as contact in the box resulted in a penalty kick from Goncalves in the 97th minute. He tucked the shot to the near post, out of reach of Hawks' keeper Jimmy Slayton.
Â
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- UMass generated ample opportunities on corners, where it held a 10-4 advantage.
- The Minutemen also edged the Hawks in shot attempts, 13-8.
- Both keepers came up with one save on the night.
- Morrison, Bastian Stech and Christoph Am Ende led the Hawks' attack with two shots apiece.
NEWS & NOTES:
- The Hawks' fist goal in the 47th minute was the first career tally for Swift. He became the seventh Hawk to net a goal this season.
- Morrison's equalizer late in regulation (88') was his second of the season.
- Prior to Jess' goal in the 70th minute, Slayton (3-2-1) and the Hawks had posted 267 minutes of scoreless soccer, dating back to a St. Joseph's score in the 63rd minute on Sept. 13.
- Despite the loss, the Hawks hold a 17-9-1 all-time record against the Minutemen.
