Hawks Overcome Adversity In 2-0 Win Against CCSU

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Hartford 2, Central Connecticut State 0
RECORDS: Hartford (4-4-1); CCSU (1-6-2)
LOCATION: Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium (West Hartford, Conn.)

THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford Men's Soccer team fought for a 2-0 victory against Central Connecticut State on Wednesday night. The Hawks, playing without a handful of key contributors, jumped out to a quick lead on a goal by sophomore Andri Jonasson in the ninth minute. Hartford maintained that lead before making it 2-0 with just nine minutes left to play when freshman Christian Deaconson tallied his first career goal. Freshman goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton finished with four saves to seal the shutout victory for the Hawks, marking the team's fifth consecutive win against CCSU.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Jonasson put Hartford on top, 1-0, in the ninth minute when he corralled a rebound off a shot by Christoph Am Ende near the far post and tapped it past CCSU keeper Nick Velleca.
  • The Hawks kept Central off the scoreboard and freshman Christian Deaconson netted an insurance goal for Hartford in the 81st minute. Deaconson scored off a throw in from Kelechi Akujobi and a pass from Jonasson.
  • Slayton picked up two saves in each period, earning his fourth career shutout.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Hartford led in shots (12-10) and corner kicks (4-1).
  • Jonasson paced the Hawks with four shots, while Daquan King also tallied four for the Blue Devils.
  • Hartford's seven points were the team's second-highest total of the season, trailing only their effort against St. Francis Brooklyn (nine).
  • The victory marked the Hawks fourth multi-goal game of the season. They are 3-1 when scoring at least twice.

NEWS & NOTES:

  • Jonasson's goal was his third of the season and the fourth of his career. He also recorded his first assist of the season and now leads the team in goals and points (seven).
  • Jonasson is now tied for 11th in the America East Conference in goals scored.
  • Deaconson's goal was the first of his career. He had played just six minutes entering Tuesday's contest and the goal came in his ninth career minute.
  • Hartford's starting lineup featured seven freshmen.
  • The Hawks were playing without seniors Jeff Tryon and Udi Cohen, as well as freshman Alexis Triadis. That trio had accounted for 40 percent of the team's scoring entering Tuesday's contest.
  • Slayton is 4-2-1, with all four victories coming in the form of a shutout. He is tied for the conference lead in shutouts.
  • Eight players have now combined to score Hartford's 12 goals this season.
  • The win was the Hawks' fifth in a row against CCSU. Hartford now holds a 14-6-2 all-time record against the Blue Devils.
