Hawks Draw Against UAlbany In Conference Opener

THE LEAD:
 
The University of Hartford Men's Soccer team battled the University at Albany to a 0-0 draw in the America East Conference opener for both squads on Saturday night at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. Freshman goalkeeper Jimmy Slayton recorded five saves, including three in the second overtime period, to earn his fifth shutout of the season. Danny Vitiello finished with four saves for the Great Danes.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Vitiello stonewalled Hawks senior Udi Cohen in the 62nd and 82nd minutes to keep Hartford off the scoreboard in regulation.
  • Vitiello added another diving save to deny Hartford senior Jeff Tryon in overtime, knocking away a Tryon header off a Hawks corner kick.
  • Slayton shined in the second overtime period, stopping UAlbany senior Leo Melgar in the 102nd minute and making a leaping save to knock away a shot by Carlos Clark in the 104th minute. Seconds later, Slater turned away another header by Bernardo Mattos in front of the net.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • UAlbany led in shots (18-9) and corner kicks (10-4).
  • The Great Danes were also whistled for more fouls (18-15) and drew more yellow cards (3-1).
  • Slayton, Kelechi Akujobi, Gael Kisombe and Mads Friis played all 100 minutes for the Hawks.
  • Cohen led the Hawks with three shots. Melgar finished with seven shots for UAlbany.
 
 
NEWS & NOTES:
 
  • Slayton's shutout was his fifth of the season and second in a row.
  • Slayton is now in sole possession of the shutouts lead in the America East.
  • Slayton now has 24 saves on the season and his goals against average of 0.69 now ranks second in the conference behind only Austin Kroll (UMass Lowell).
  • Hartford's starting lineup featured seven freshmen.
  • Defenders Andre Morrison, Mads Friis and Kelechi Akujobi have been in the starting lineup for all five of the Hawks' shutouts. Mike Barry has been in the Starting XI for four shutouts, including Saturday's.
  • The Great Danes had scored 10 goals in their previous four games before facing Hartford.
 
 
UP NEXT:
The Hawks will wrap up their four-game home stand against Northeastern on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. Hartford is 16-5-2 all-time against the Huskies, marking the second-most wins against any opponent in program history.
