Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Hartford Sports Information

Rookies Shine as Hawks Come From Behind to Top FDU, 3-2

RESULT: Hartford 3, Fairleigh Dickinson 2
RECORD: Hartford (4-1-0); FDU (1-4-0)
LOCATION: Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium (West Hartford, Conn.)

THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford women's soccer team used three unanswered scores to claw back from a two-goal deficit and beat Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-2, in its home opener on Sunday at Al-Marzook Field. Freshman Kaila Lozada, who had a hand in each of the Hawks' three goals, netted the equalizer in the 40th minute before classmate Sierra Stone completed the comeback by delivering the game-winning strike in the 74th minute.

The win was the third straight for the Hawks, who were coming off the heels of another come-from-behind victory at Siena (2-1) four days ago.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • FDU stunned Hartford with two early goals, both of which came off the boot of Jessi Reinhardt. In the third minute, the Knights' striker put the finishing touches on a pass from Elma Kolenovic from six yards out to make it a 1-0 FDU lead.
  • Less than six minutes later, Kolenovic connected with Reinhardt from short-range again to put the Knights up by a 2-0 count with 37 minutes left until halftime.
  • The early two-goal disadvantage did not rattle the Hawks. Hartford became the attacking side, and produced quality looks on its first three attempts, including a near miss from freshman defender Skylar Vitiello that hit off the crossbar.
  • In the 24th minute, the Hawks pulled within a goal of the Knights thanks to sophomore Julia Carr's second marker of the year. A series of touch passes from Lozada and fellow classmate Bridgette Alexander set up the marker for a streaking Carr, who booted a shot from the right past FDU keeper Amanda Fitzgerald.
  • Lozada pulled the Hawks back to even with less than six minutes remaining in the half. From the right side, sophomore Ashley Claud, who entered the match as the Hawks' leading scorer with seven points, served a perfect ball into the box for Lozada to head home.
  • Out of the intermission, Hartford continued to bombard FDU's back line with scoring opportunities. In the 74th minute, the Hawks found the go-ahead tally as Stone took a feed from Lozada inside of the 18-yard box and beat Fitzgerald to the left with her third score of the year.
  • Down the stretch, Hartford's defense smothered the Knights and held the visiting squad without any looks at the equalizer.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Hartford had a balanced attack throughout the match, attempting seven shots in each of the two stanzas.
  • The Hawks held a commanding advantage in shots (14-5) and nipped the Knights in shots on goal with a 5-4 edge.
  • Jurg made two saves between the posts to improve to 4-1-0 on the season.
  • Her counterpart, Fitzgerald, also came up with a pair of saves for FDU.
  • Following the Knights' barrage of goals to open the game, the Hawks back line kept FDU quiet for the remaining 82 minutes of action.
  • Hartford's freshmen accounted for seven of the team's 10 points in the win.

NEWS & NOTES:

  • Lozada finished the match with a career-high four points behind a goal and an assist.
  • The Hawks' rookies have combined for five of the team's 11 goals and have accounted for 16 of 33 points this season.
  • Between the posts, Jurg earned her 33rd career win to move into fourth in Hartford's record books.
  • Claud has combined for a team-leading eight points (3g, 2a) during Hartford's current three-game win streak.
