Hawks Drop Wagner, 4-0, for Fourth-Straight Win

RESULT: Hartford 4, Wagner 0
RECORD: Hartford (5-1); Wagner (1-6)
LOCATION: Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium (West Hartford, Conn.)

THE LEAD:

The University of Hartford women's soccer team rolled to a 4-0 victory over Wagner on Thursday night at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium. A dominant performance from the defense coupled with three first-half goals from sophomore Julia Carr, redshirt-senior Caroline Massey and sophomore Hayley Nolan allowed the Hawks to cruise to their fourth-straight win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A handball by the Seahawks inside the box resulted in a penalty kick for Hartford in the 19th minute. Carr took the honors, and gave the Hawks a lead they would not relinquish by beating Seahawks' keeper Katie Viscardi with a low strike to the far post.
  • Playing with the lead, Hartford continued to dominant on both ends of the pitch. The Hawks produced quality looks in the attacking third while holding the Seahawks to minimal possession.
  • In the 36th minute, Hartford doubled its lead to 2-0 on a header from Massey. The redshirt-senior hit the upper right corner of the net with a long ball served into the box from freshman Skylar Vitiello.
  • The offense continued to roll for the Hawks before the halftime break, with Nolan getting in on the scoring action to make it a 3-0 Hartford advantage in the 39th minute. Senior Tori Tripp pushed a pass to Nolan, who covered some ground before beating Viscardi with a long blast from 30-yards out.
  • Out of the halftime break, senior defender Caitlin Smallfield tacked on an insurance goal for the Hawks. At the 51:34 mark, she redirected a free kick from reigning America East Rookie of the Year past Viscardi to extend the lead to 4-0.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Hawks put together a dominant effort on both sides of the pitch, outshooting Wagner, 16-4, while holding a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • After being held without a scoring opportunity in the first half, the Seahawks managed to muster up two shots on goal, but Jurg was in place to make both of those saves.
  • Ashley Claud, the Hawks' leading scorer with eight points, led the attack with four shots while Lozada and Carr attempted three apiece.

NEWS & NOTES:

  • Thursday's victory over Wagner extended the Hawks' win streak to four matches.
  • Hartford's 5-1-0 start matches last season's record through six games. It also marks the program's best start since 2011, when the Hawks opened the year with a 5-0-1 record.
  • Between the posts, Jurg picked up her 26th career shutout and 34th career win. She now ranks fourth in program history in victories and second in clean sheets.
  • Carr's goal improved her team-best total to three, while Smallfield netted her second marker of the season in the win.
  • The Hawks' current four-game win-streak marks the longest since the 2015 season, when they won four-straight from Sept. 3-Sept. 13.

NEXT ON TAP:
The Hawks' longest homestand of the season comes to an end on Sunday, Sept. 11, against Fordham. The tilt marks the first meeting between the Hawks and Rams since 2002. Opening kickoff from Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m.
