THE LEAD:
John Carroll had a season-high 15 points, but UMBC continued its stellar start, hitting 17-of-33 from beyond the arc in an 84-68 victory over the Hartford men's basketball team on Wednesday. The Retrievers remained undefeated in conference play with the triumph.

Jalen Ross scored 16 points and had a career-high nine rebounds in a losing effort for the Hawks, while Hassan Attia matched his career best with nine boards as well.

Will Darley led the way for UMBC, delivering 29 points on 7-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc, while Jairus Lyles (16) and Joe Sherburne (14) also finished with double-digit scoring. K.J. Maura delivered six assists and Lyles also added five steals for the visitors.

FIRST HALF:
UMBC got off to a roaring start, exploding to a 16-2 lead, as the Hawks opened the game ice cold from the field. Jason Dunne then got a pair of quick consecutive buckets to trim it to 16-6, but the Retrievers embarked on a 9-2 run to push their lead to 25-8 early on.

The Hawks refused to go quietly, though, and a two from Hassan Attia sparked the home squad on a 16-2 run to cut the lead to just three points. John Carroll had a strong performance in the rally, netting nine points in the streak, and Jack Hobbs capped off the run with a three-ball. But UMBC collected itself, and ended the stanza on a 10-3 run to enter the locker room ahead by 10.

SECOND HALF:
UMBC opened the second by scoring the first seven points for a 44-27 edge. The Hawks went on a quick 8-2 run, capped off by another Ross three, to cut it to 46-35, but the Retrievers again had the answer, rolling off eight straight to push the lead up to 21. The Hawks cut it back down to 14 after a J.R. Lynch jumper, but UMBC saw a Darley three send it on another rally.

Hartford continued to heat up on the offensive end, but nothing could cool off the Retrievers' outside shooting. UMBC seemingly had an answer for every shot the Hawks made, as the road squad finished off the victory.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Ross extended his double-figure scoring streak to 31-straight games, dating back to January of last year. He finished with nine rebounds, setting a new career high.
  • Carroll went 6-for-8 from the field and delivered his highest scoring output since netting 17 against Niagara in November 2015.
  • Max Twyman had a career-high six points in the defeat for the Hawks, knocking down a pair of threes.
  • The Hawks won the battle of the boards, 38-36, outrebounding the opposition for the second time this year.
