Stony Brook Ends Hawks' Winning Streak in Double OT

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Stony Brook 1, Hartford 0 (2ot)
RECORDS: Hartford (6-6-1, 2-1 AE); Stony Brook (5-7-1, 2-1 AE)
LOCATION: Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium (West Hartford, Conn.)

THE LEAD:

Facing overtime for the second-straight outing, the University of Hartford women's soccer team came up short against Stony Brook on Sunday, as Alyssa Francese scored in the 106th minute to snap a four-game winning streak for the Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Stony Brook had a few scoring chances early on, but Hartford's defense held strong to keep the Seawolves off the board. The Hawks also threatened in the opening half, as sophomore Sierra Stone missed just wide of the near post on a long shot in the 24 minute before junior Julia Carr's attempt on a free kick from 21 yards out missed just high in the 26th minute.
  • Both sides continued to attack in the second half, as shots were even at seven apiece during that stretch.
  • Lozada had a chance to end the match on a Hartford corner kick generated with just under six minutes to play. After a serve from Stone was knocked out of the box, redshirt-sophomore defender Anna Cronin played a high ball through to Lozada, but her shot was directed just over the crossbar.
  • Francese's goal came at the 105:31 mark, as she sent a shot into the upper right part of the net from the corner of the box to send the Seawolves home with the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
  • Hartford keeper Maia Perez, who came up with several clutch plays throughout the match, including a pair of saves in the first overtime period, finished with six stops.
  • Sofia Manner stopped three shots on the afternoon for the Seawolves.
  • After Hartford held a 14-11 advantage in shot opportunities in regulation, Stony Brook held the upperhand in overtime, combining for a 6-2 edge.
  • The Seawolves also held the edge in corner kicks, finishing with a 9-3 advantage.
  • Falling to Stony Brook for just the third time, Hartford still holds a commanding lead in the all-time series with a 13-3-5 edge.

UP NEXT:
A rematch of the last two America East Championship title games is on the docket for Hartford, as the Hawks head to UAlbany on Thursday, Oct. 5 for a 7 p.m. tilt. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
