SET-BY-SET
• The first set was a tremendous battle, with the teams gaining 16 ties. The Hawks held the first momentum swing, opening a 9-6 lead with Bridges at the serve, but UML chipped away and finally knotted things up at 14. The River Hawks used a rally of their own to open a 20-17 lead and the teams traded points to 22-19, but the visitors rallied to tie it up at 23. From there, the squads traded blows to a 28-all score, but UML got the final tally, taking a 30-28 first stanza.
• The second was tilted more in the Hawks' direction, with Hartford opening a 7-5 lead after a Modestow ace. Hartford pushed the lead to 12-9 following a Henchy kill, and eventually moved the advantage to 17-14. The River Hawks delivered four-straight points to regain the lead, but Hartford came right back with four of its own, and upped the advantage to 23-19 on a Henchy kill, en route to a 25-22 victory.
• UML opened an early edge in the third, taking a 15-11 lead, but the Hawks came roaring back to earn four straight with Megan Scherer at the serve to knot things up at 15. The River Hawks regained a 19-18 lead, then pulled away en route to a 25-20 triumph.
• In the fourth, the teams started even, with the Hawks earning the first momentum swing, as an Anderson kill put the visitors up 16-12. UMass Lowell chipped away at the deficit, cutting it to 18-16, but the Hawks rolled off four straight to take a 22-16 lead and sailed to a 25-20 triumph.
• The home squad took momentum early in the fifth, opening a 4-1 lead, but the Hawks came right back with three straight to knot things up at 4-all. UML was able to garner a 7-5 lead, but with Bridges at the serve, the Hawks notched five in a row, two on Braun kills, to garner a 10-7 lead. The River Hawks remained undeterred, though, coming right back to knot things up at 10, and eventually had match point, up 14-13. But Henchy came through with a kill to make it 14-all, then a kill by Nash and a Bridges block sent the Hawks out victorious.
