Hawks Drop Overtime Heartbreaker in Regular-Season Finale at Binghamton

THE BASICS:

RESULT: Binghamton 3, Hartford 2 (ot)
RECORDS: Hartford (8-8-2, 4-3-1 AE); Binghamton (11-3-4; 5-2-1 AE)
LOCATION: Bearcats Sports Complex (Vestal, N.Y.)

THE LEAD:

Erin Theiller spoiled the University of Hartford women's soccer team's comeback bid on Sunday, scoring in the 94th minute on a corner kick to lift Binghamton to a 3-2 win at Bearcats Sports Complex in both teams' regular-season finale. The Hawks overcame a 2-0 deficit in the defeat, but were unable to pull off the come-from-behind victory down the stretch.

The Hawks, who finish fourth in the conference standings, will host No. 5 Stony Brook on Al-Marzook Field in the upcoming America East Championship on Thursday while Binghamton, which clinched a share of the league's regular-season title, receives a bye in the playoffs as the No. 2 seed.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Binghamton got on the board with two early goals, as Genne Michitti put the finishing touches on a cross from Ryan Reilly in the seventh minute before Dora Hayes found the back of the net 130 seconds later after slipping a shot to the lower left part of the net. The Bearcats' first marker was the first for the squad against the Hawks since 2009.
  • Sophomore Bridgette Alexander quickly pulled the Hawks within one, though. In the 15th minute, she turned a defender from the top left corner of the box, and fired a shot into the upper 90 to make it a one-goal game.
  • Hartford's defense kept the Bearcats' attack at bay for the remainder of the half, holding Binghamton to just one scoring threat during that final stretch. Kayla Saagar, the league's leading scorer, ripped a shot from on top of the box with five minutes left, but missed just high to keep it a one-goal match at intermission.
  • Hartford wasted little time in finding the equalizer after halftime. Just 50 seconds after the break, sophomore Kaila Lozada had a great finish from 10-yards out on a through ball from classmate Sierra Stone to draw the two sides even at 2-2.
  • With the score still tied despite the Hawks dominating great stretches, Hartford was unable to cash in on a miscue by Binghamton's back line in the 75th minute. Facing an empty net, the Hawks were on the attack, but Sam O'Malley took a red card inside of the box to prevent what would have been the easy go-ahead tally. Junior Julia Carr took the honors on the ensuing penalty kick, but Binghamton keeper Katie Hatziyianis was in place to make the stop and keep the match tied.
  • After regulation, the score was still knotted, and the match was sent into overtime with the Hawks holding an 11-10 advantage on the field. Binghamton was the side to prevail in extra time, with Theiller providing the heroics after 3:56 went off the clock off a volley on a corner kick.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS & NOTES:
  • Alexander and Lozada each improved their team-best goal totals to seven in the defeat.
  • Sunday's match marked the fifth time Hartford faced overtime in eight league games. The Hawks are 2-2-1 in those games, with its lone setback coming to Stony Brook earlier this month.
  • The setback disrupted a commanding run by the Hawks against Binghamton, as they entered the match riding seven-straight shutout victories. Hartford remains in the lead in the all-time series with an 11-5-1 advantage.
  • Hatziyinais made seven saves in net for the Bearcats while Hawks' keeper Maia Perez came away with five stops in the losing effort.
  • Hartford will make an appearance in the America East's postseason for the eighth-straight year, and the 12th time in head coach John Natale's 14-year career.
